Maybe times are changing. Because if you go to any college in America, you'll find the women are often just as brash and tactless as the men.

I have noticed a tendency for women to be more polite than men in many areas, and not just the area of humor; although there are certainly exceptions to the rule. However, despite the fact that crude humor can indeed be funny sometimes ( in limited or specialized doses, especially ) there are lots of other areas of humor that women can still be ( and are ) funny in, if they choose not to get laughs by....say.... smashing a watermelon.

Pointing out the "sacred cows" of society, or making fun of tropes that one's own role in life seems to frequently call for, can also be done in a dry or understated sort of way, and yet still ignite the subversive vibe that leads to laughter, assuming one is speaking to a crowd with some intelligence.

"The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them that they are being attacked and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

I've been thinking about this. Maybe Mr. Hitchens is limited by a masculinocentric perspective. He assumes the humor of males is the norm because they've been the dominant power for so long. Maybe he also believes heteros are funnier than homos, and that whites are funnier than non-whites. He can't help it really; he's trapped inside that fishbowl.

It would take quite an event to create the kind of paradigm shift that would make it possible for him to see it any differently.

I agree with Hitch. Only one woman I know, whom I know personally, can make me laugh when she tries.

Hitchens's purpose is to sell papers, and thereby to sell his columns. Once you're relatively well-known, it's fairly easy to do that by being controversial.
