    Default The Word "Retard"

I often use this word to describe my friends when they do something incredibly stupid.

Is the word offensive only when used to refer to someone with a mental handicap, or at all times?

I would never use this word to refer to someone with a mental handicap, and if I did, I'm pretty sure I would feel so guilty that I would cry myself to sleep two nights in a row. But seeing some of the things my friends do, well, I've yet to find a more appropriate description than the word "retarded."

i'm usually aware of someone's intentions so i'm only offended by offensive intentions...phrasing doesn't mean as much to me.

Hmm, interesting point. I would never call a handicapped person retarded. But I will admit that I use the word in my daily vocabulary to describe events, situations, actions, and stupid people. I don't give much thought to how an actual retarded person feels to have their condition also be used as a negative descriptor. The same thing with the word "gay." I know in my high school, its use was very prevalent in describing a negative event, person, etc, and I do admit to using it myself.

I use the word shamelessly..... unless I know for SURE there's someone around like a parent/sibling of someone with downs, then I really don't care what effect it has on anyone. It's just a word, and the usage of words and their context will change over time.

I think it's fine, and I use it in jest with friends. The problem is that "retarded" is a perfectly acceptable real word that somehow became a slur, and now you can't even refer to someone who IS retarded as retarded.

    Which is retarded.

When referring to a mentally disabled person, the politically correct way is "person who is a Tard".
