I don't see why retard would be offensive when describing a mentally retarded person.
    It's just descriptive then.

So calling your friends retards would make the term offensive for real retards, you just create the offense by using it.

I'd prefer to use the fitting scientific term to describe a mentally impaired person. And don't actually call my friends retard by the way.

All my friends are smart people.
That's why we're friends after all.

Because it's now a synonym for stupid. If you spill your drink all over yourself, no one is really going to say, "zomg Dinner, you're so down syndrome!" Some of the higher functioning autistic kids are really offended by it.

And I'm supposed to care because?

Are you going to start about how your little cousin (...) or something?
Imo intellectual is just as much of an offense as retard.

It's like calling an individual with Asperger syndrome, Aspie. It's a shortened version, but in time it became used negatively. Therefore, it's politically incorrect. However, they can call themselves whatever they want.

It heavily depends on the context but no, I don't use that word to insult anyone. Stupid or "the stare" work better.

I don't like it being used, since it's really an insult to retarded people. What do they have to do with anything?

I don't call mentally impaired people retards because I think it's stupid.
Not because deep down I fear people's judgment or don't want to hurt their feelings. I'm not insensible, I have this little Fe knocking everytime I do something hurtful. But I'm willing to kick it's ass to stay intellectually neutral.

Understanding the way things work and not being willing to say something hurtful simply because I have no reason to hurt them is different than not doing something because democracy have brainwashed us into thinking everybody should be the same.

I find that many people who say things such as 'it's offensive' and so on are more motivated by a fear of judgment and internalized moral values of the zeitgeist than geniune understanding of their own behavior.
People tend to say things and do the opposite, say they'd act brave if situation X 'd come up and don't. Say "Xism is stupid" while accepting it blindly.

So I'm not saying it's one of the reasons why you guys do that since I simply do not know you. Just giving it a thought.

Remember than a century ago it was 'normal' to think black people were inferior for example, and most people who today think 'it's wronng!' would have accepted it as right for the same reasons.

Wow, you have a lot to learn about the F side of things then Eck. It's not out of fear or social unacceptance. If anything internal "guilt" is the main (un)motivator. It's about coherence too. If I wouldn't say such a word in front of a mentally impaired person for fear of hurting his/her feelings then I'm not going to use it behind their backs.

Obviously nothing is black and white, but there you go.

This thread made Falcarius nostalgic, as it reminded him when both him and Brendan got a formal warning on INTPc for calling each other retards a few years back. He just looked over his PMs at INTPc, apparently the messages got deleted because it might offend people despite the fact Falcarius was the dinosaur person who got called a retard in the first instant and nicely asked for the messages to be kept up. If that does not sum up why political correctness is stupid then Falcarius does not know what will.

As for the OP he voted for the last option.
