Man on arson death charge | theage.com.au

Tonight the city smelt like ash and the moon was a horrifying orange colour. It was a lot warmer today and I'm worried for this weekend.

That guy would wanna be locked down so tightly, there's more than a few people who'd love a couple of moments with him forever.

Absolutely. I'd want a couple of physical "words" with him myself. If he's proven guilty, of course. Anything before that is premature.

If he were convicted, surely they'd have to give him life for his own protection.

Never makes it ok but damn I can't blame anyone for feeling that way, I'd struggle to have any sympathy no matter the circumstances leading to his actions if he is guilty.

I want to understand what would possess anyone to ever consider lighting a bush fire at anytime let alone on a 47oC day. Don't think there's ever reason enough for it to be understood though.

Hope nothing else goes wrong this weekend over there.

Nope. They can't give anymore than the maximum sentence. The charge of arson causing death carries a maximum penalty of 25 years' jail, while intentionally lighting a bushfire has a penalty of up to 15 years. Of course the other alternative is a psych ward which is a different set of rules but you still canít be sentenced longer than the maximum, just no guarantee youíll get out at that point.

I'm still kind of in shock about it all. Been reading all the news reports, and will donate some money when I get paid next.
Been reading all the reports, makes me kinda sick in my stomach that some one deliberately started one of the fires.
Currently submerged under an avalanche of books and paper work. I may come back up for air from time to time.

If he were convicted, I'd imagine that he would have to be in isolation for his own protection. They're also trying to protect that CFA volunteer who started multiple fires hoping that his unit would get called out.

Trin, they've been running programs on arsonists on Today Tonight, ACA etc. this week. Typically it's young male attention-seeking behavior, and being thought of as the "hero". I still don't get it, and don't think I ever will.

I'm hoping that this weekend will be ok too.

How does lighting a fire in the bush in the middle of summer make you a hero? Oh wait, not being very bright must be part of the profile.

Taking credit for permanently affecting people's lives? Making a mark in the world? I don't know. It's probably just for the wide destruction "achieved".
