To reject Valentines day just because it's Valentines Day makes as much sense as religiously practicing Valentines Day just because it is Valentines Day. If one is moved to celebrate it, just do so in your own way, and if not then don't.

    Valentines Day is lame.

Holidays are only worthwile if they make the general population happier, thus having a positive effect on humanity. With Valentines Day I don't see it.

Also I may be emotionally scarred after I had a bad allergic reaction to eating cinnamon hearts in kindergarten.

er, I was just explaining how I feel about Valentine's Day and why it doesn't touch me. Why ditch it if it means something to you. *shrug*

To clarify:I was making general comment, that's why I didn't quote anyone.

Edit: Between husband and myself it is an excuse to indulge our shared sweet tooth guilt free. Most years he buys me a big heart full of chocolates and we share them over the next few days. I hate dark chocolate and he loves it so he gets all the dark chocolate pieces. We get ridiculous sugar highs and go into deep NF explorations on all sorts of silly topics. A lot of fun---until we get the sugar crash and get snippy with each other.

I guess that's a point-of-view kind of distinction. I don't hate Valentine's Day, and when I have a girlfriend I usually do something. But it gives me the same kind of feeling that I get when a celebrity becomes a spokesman for a disease that they happen to suffer from...what moved them? Self-interest or true altruism? What I mean by this is that V-Day is not an opportunity to prove your affection, because displaying affection is the standard for that day. It's like saying you're a good citizen because you pay your taxes and perform jury duty. To me, the opportunities are the other 364 days of the year when a gesture can make a point, not V-Day when only the absence of a gesture makes a point.

I approve of Vday, the odds that I'll be offered something delicious and free to eat drastically improve.
