Talking about popularity is interesting, but actual popularity contests (that is to say, threads that seem like them) are just a fact of life for a message board, and can be sort of entertaining, but not nearly as much as a controversial thread (such as talking about popularity).

Apparently, I've missed something. I wasn't even aware that happens.

I detest stuff like that. It reminds me of being in seventh grade again. And I was one of the "popular kids." But I totally failed at team sports and when we drew up sides for any team sport I was always the last one to be chosen. And it felt like thit.

So I always think of the kids who aren't "popular" and how it must make them feel.

I think some people just feel unsure of themselves and look for the "right group" to allign themselves with when they join a forum. The "right group" can mean any number of different things. But that cliquey kind of bent generally disappears as people become more self-confident.

If I'm in a group of "mature" women and they're still playing those old school games I'm outta the room pretty fast. Don't want to hang out in the mob mentality.

I will mention that there's a difference between a healthy group and an unhealthy group. And both groups do have a lot of social power.

I'm clueless what this thread is even talking about as far as this board is concerned.

It's a message board. People get out of it what they put in, however much or little. Certain people form fondnesses for each other or have certain opinions in common. Whatever one likes or dislikes, one can take or leave. There's even a filter for undesiribles.

And the web is full of forms, one can always search for a place where they feel more in sync with the people there. Real life was never so easy.

i don't notice "popularity", unless it takes the form of hyper-flirting and/or going off-topic to a ridiculous degree.
