I guess what it means is you can't reliably count on people to be aware of their own likability and / or our culture has some serious checks in place against ego run amok.
Yeah, I thought it was pretty interesting too. Maybe people tend to think at some level that they're being ignored if they aren't actually quoted? Maybe with no eye-to-eye contact the only way people feel sure they're liked by anyone here is through an extended PM-exchange rather than posting-as-normal? Maybe there's just a lot of low self-esteem on these boards? Not that I'm suggesting that a low rating = low self-esteem. It may well be warranted, through being new to the forum for instance.

so...by this post it makes me think you expected some serious data through this...but people don't answer these things honestly...they either go low to get an ego boost from someone or vote high to be silly...no one really knows...how could anyone really know. there's a lot of people on this board and a lot have been here for a long time and a lot know each other from intpc and who knows who's talkin to who, you know? i'm confident that i've gotten to know quite a few people and feel like we like each other pretty equally...but there's a lot of people on here that i don't know...so who knows, right?

When there is a lack of interaction, a person is only left to make an assumption of whether they are liked or disliked by another. I think a rational person would not presume either one and therefore would still end up closer to the lower end of the scale as it is labeled "unknown".

    Not again the popularity stuff.

but I think I'll answer anyway.

I think I'm mostly universally unknown.

Yeah this is probably the case with a public poll, but with a private poll there's not much incentive to answer dishonestly. But that ship has sailed and I'm over it. Personally, I think most people would've voted between 2 and 6, with the occasional just-to-be-contrary 10. Guessing the average vote would've been ~3. It's ~4 atm.

Edit: Dammit Booyalab stop trying to Godwin's my thread!
