I realize this might sound a bit fluffy and lame to some, but I feel compelled to give a little cyber-squeeze to the people who voted universally unknown and stuff. It's sad, possibly a funny joke for some, and rather cute of folks to put themselves in that category. I'm not convinced it corresponds to reality.

I think it's normal to assume that in a forum like this, lots of other people are in cliques, and know each other, whereas "you" are relatively unknown. It's just a side effect of seeing all that public thread communication, you think everyone is talking all the time, and you only get to see it occasionally. In the real world, you miss conversations that aren't where you are present, so you dont get the same "I am not part of it" feel.

Conflating recognition and affection and ignoring power? This poll certainly has little to do with the concept of popularity as it operated at my middle and high schools. The popular kids were universally known but not necessarily universally liked, more like either useful to know (Haight, you're totally like the rich kid ) or somehow personally intimidating (although, to be fair, I think you get points on this one too - and I'm not just saying that to stroke the ego of the rich kid ).

That said, around a year ago I think I would have voted 8 or 9 for high recognition (and high power) and, uh, divided affections. Nowadays I think I am closer to being universally liked (right after I send this I'm off to PM a certain member asking if they mind my publicizing the fact that we recently had a perfectly amiable PM exchange *) but a large share of the active members are probably unfamiliar with me. Depending on the size of that share (*resists urge to create Ecocentric poll*), I think I'm anywhere from a 3 to a 7 now.

    * Edit: That certain member doesn't mind at all and is nottaprettygal (for those who couldn't guess).

"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

hey, being a 0 on here means that you're more likely to be a 10 in LIFE.
