Default Laughing at television more when others are in the room

maybe it's just me, but i've noticed that i laugh out loud when watching television, etc. when someone else is in the room.

when alone, the exact same things get just a smile (and even then only sometimes) and a mental laugh. unless it's extremely funny.

    any ideas on why?

Laughing is a bonding exercise between humans - it is proven to increase feelings of altruism to follow humans... it's the reason why we play "social" games that matter only because we laugh together (charades and the like). So you are interacting in your own special way...

Either that, or the TV is far better company than them?

Laugher is contagious. Also I find TV to be much more enjoyable when I'm watching it with someone else. It doens't matter whether it is comedy, drama or something else. Combine the two ideas and you'll find that laughing in front of the TV is a lot easier with someone else around.

My husband does this a lot, and I find myself doing it as well. I think it's because "I'm having so much fun watching this, you might want to come join me" is happening. I *know* it is for him; he's of the mind that he can't really enjoy something unless I do.

    Really.

Phew, i thought it was just me, I tend to laugh more when other people are in the room, yet alone I will just chuckle to myself.

Hmm... I actually laugh (and cry) at the same things whether others are present or not, and whether I'm reading it, or watching it on televison. If anything, I'm less expressive and more formal around strangers, but much more expressive alone, and around people I already know.

so it's a subconscious way we humans form connections? if so, i find it amazing that we do this without even thinking.

i've also found that what's funny alone is even more so when with another. even going so far as to build on what was just seen sometimes in order to laugh more and harder.

Of course we do! If a good friend of yours arrives and starts laughing and laughing.. telling you they saw the funniest thing... soon you'll start smiling and laughing with them.. eventually. "so what was it?" you'll say. Doesn't matter, you've connected.

wonder what else we do without even thinking that results in our connecting with others...

    and, no "body language" answers.

i'm wondering about the things i haven't heard of before.
