I believe it's illegal to have an intimate relationship with therapists. Not that I'm against breaking the law, I just don't want to go to jail, because relationships in jail are not very pleasant.

Why is it illegal for therapists to have relationships with their patients, anyway?

Because it is taking advantage of someone who is emotionally unstable and generally looks up to you. It leaves the patient at the mercy of the therapist who can manipulate them anyway they want...basically your worst nightmare *grin*

For the same reasons surgeons don't operate on family members. Emotional attachments cloud judgment. Additionally, a therapist is privy to sensitive emotional facts about a patient that make a relationship unbalanced and subject to manipulation.

A therapist/analyst who's written a few books about Jungian topics (e.g. synchronicity) makes an argument in one of his books that for a therapist to be truly effective, he or she has to allow themselves to become a part of their patients' lives, to be a truly effective healer. With the brick-wall of professionalism in place, a therapist's job is only marginally effective at best. The specific example he gave involved a patient asking her therapist if she'd like to pursue a friendship with him, so that's not quite the same thing but still touches on the same subject.

Interesting, I'm thinking this is why therapists never worked for me.
