It only annoys me if it's people I care to pay attention to. In other words, knock yourself out.

I do associate the avatar, but when someone changes it, I just associate an additional avatar with the user.

    I have avatars turned off.

Out of curiosity, do you (or anyone sympathetic to the OP) find that your impression is governed by the familiarity of the avatar?

That is to say, does the person lose importance/legitimacy consequent to their avatar selection?

Not usually. It just takes me longer to read and associate ideas.

It might if their new avatar is trying to send a message that I find offputting/illegitimate.

I'm a total visual learner. An avatar can influence my attempt at reading the general tone of a post. It's kind of like that experiment they talk about in film class. Where the guy showed a picture of food and then a face. And then people would read the expression on the face as hunger. (And other emotions when the face was shown with different pictures.)

On some forums I have had one avatar (or one character) consistently with little intent of changing for anything other than a one-off like Halloween as it just fits and I feel its a good representation of me, on others like this forum it changes with my moods. I have one forum at the moment where Im going through a progression of somewhat crazy avatars cause it represents how I feel. Its more expressive I think.

    I do this too.

I also have avatars turned off half the time so it's not a big deal.

Yes. And it messes me up when they change it.

Good question. I do identify the user with aspects of their name or avatar. For example, there is some commonality between your current and previous avatars: organic materials, rather baroque presentation, antiquarian illustrations of anthropomorphic vegetable figures. I do find myself wondering if this corresponds with some aspect of your character or personality. I do believe your avatar selection says something about you, but this would depend on any individual's interpretation.

If I had different versions of my current avatar I might change it. But, I still want to portray a consistent identity.
