Aha, no vanity here Yes, what you said is basically why I have one. I also greatly prefer having an avatar over having none simply because it makes it easier to find where my posts were (to check for replies).

Of course. Congratulations on finding a good match.

A faux pas? I guess I am more ignorant of the history here than I thought. Whatever brought about that trend that you mention?

I've never quite understood the self-avatar thing. It's not something I'd do. I look at avatars as a mode of expression--whatever you're feeling at the time, you share with the world.

I used to thing self-avs were vain, but now I realize that lots of folks just think it makes sense for people to know whom they're talking to. It still seems a bit odd to me, though. Like I'm looking at someone's driver's license to verify their identity.

The first time I ever really started using the internet was in 2004 and in 2005 I found my first forum and instantly fell in love.

Growing up, my friends and I would engage in forum-like discourse and debate, which I and when I moved away from my friends, I found the forum setting to be a nice social substitute/supplement.

I have ALWAYS used self-avatars because I believe it adds a personal component as well as an element of realism to what can be, at times, an overly detached and sterile pseudo-social environment.

Also, anything I post in cyberspace, I either would or do actually state in real life, so in other words: I attempt to make as tangible as possible the fact that I am a real human being.

Believe you me you don't wanna see what's under this mask.

I would use my photo if I wasn't trying to remain anonymous.

I used to use one, but then it felt weird seeing my face everywhere when I was spilling it about something. I like it when other people use one. Always use one in ichat. Always change the other person's avatar to their face too cos I think it looks cute to see two people chatting away in the conversation.

i'm never really happy with my pictures. i hate that little delay between when i press the button and when the picture's taken. my smile turns from something vibrant to something really forced and awkward. that's why i like using other things as my avatar. it's room for expression and i like that.
