It's not the oldest galaxy, they don't know that. There may be a 420.001 years after the big bang galaxy just behind that one. The title implies that it is "THE oldest" galaxy in the universe, however. :D

And that is why I hate press, and especially the titles - exaggeration and covered truth. In the first sentence, however, they mention that this is "in the known universe."

Yeah well "Universe" implies "known universe" without saying.

They tend to not speculate on these things. It wouldn't make sense to say that there's an older galaxy that we don't know about since we don't know it. So this almost always means "this is the oldest/biggest/furthest away/whatever that we know about so far".

Though we have now discovered the oldest galaxy in the Universe we have yet to detect the oldest advanced alien super-civilization.

What new wonders undreampt of in our time will we have wrought in another generation?

I journey of this amazing magnitude should shower our hearts with hope and fill our minds with supreme delight!

Unkempt, pre-empt, but not undreampt.

Once science invents a Macroscope like the one in Piers Anthony's book by the same name, you'll be able to look into those depths - and find that you're staring into your own reflection.

Good point, Mal. Yesterday's science fiction is often tomorrow's reality.

Maybe it's actually OUR universe and we are seeing it through like a time warp thingy as we gaze across the other side of the universe at ourselves.

Or something.
