I normally think German cars are gigantic pieces of over-engineered crap, but that's one sweet ride.

That said, this is going to be my mid-life crisis car one day:

I’m definitely a convertible guy myself. Though, the sportback sedan shape that many automakers are taking on these days are certainly eye-catching as well.

I'm not a convertible guy at all, yet an SL coupe makes me feel like I'm some straight scotch drinking James Bond-esque Casanova figure.

This used to be my dream car throughout my late teens and early twenties, yet now that I've actually been in a financial position to own one, I couldn't be bothered. I think I'm past my tuner V6 japanese car phase and am currently residing in my American muscle V8 with obnoxiously loud exhaust phase.

Oh yes, the G35 coupe when it was all hot stuff in the day, so many of my friends pined for that car. I never really went through a rice rocket phase myself. I do think at times though, that I feel the dream itself, for what it is, hoping to get that ideal car some day...is what most attracts me, rather than the actual car. If I were to find myself in a position to nab a TT roadster some day (I’ve always loved the design of those things), I almost feel I’d be in a similar boat as you and sort of shrug my shoulders. Maybe because by then my tastes may have changed or maybe, it really is the dreaming in itself, that I find myself fond of, not the actual dream.

That's what the manufacturers are depending on, that the consumer will make purchasing decisions based on how it makes him feel rather than how it meets his needs and budget, and not just for cars, but for other products as well.

At some points in our lives, some of us might consider feeling a certain way to be a need.

I agree. It is rare that those needs can be satisfied by the purchase of consumer goods, though.

I have a coworker who has one of these. I think one of the worse things about them is that if the battery dies, it can desync a few things in the engine and essentially destroying it. (By desync, I mean it doesn't have a analogue timing belt, but an electrical one)
