How odd we would describe light as transferring data. We might as well say a sunset is transferring data, or the light in our lover's eyes is transferring data, or that the light on a movie screen is merely transferring data.

We could say we are having a conversation or say we are merely transferring data.

And I think it is the 'merely' that gives the game away. 'Transferring data' is in fact pejorative. It is putting down magic. It hates the magic of light and turns magic into 'transferring data'.

'Transferring data' is something a depressive would say. It depresses us. It saps our spirit. It fits us for a boring job of transferring data, when we could be having a conversation, or sculpting in light, or discovering the unknown.

'Transferring data' immures us in a cubicle entering data into the keyboard.

'Transferring data' is part of the authoritarian, literate world - the linear sequential world. Whereas, to our eyes, light happens all at once. The speed of light is so fast, we can't even see it, yet it enables us to see everything else.

Light burst forth from the dark universe about 13.7 billion years ago, and it has been travelling ever since, right to our very eyes, where it makes itself at home.

No wonder the Australian Government sees it appropriate to bring light to every Australian home.

I disagree, transfering data is an amazing ability, it is magical in itself, because data is energy. When you see something or have a conversation, you impart and exchange your energy. It is present at every scale of nature, the only reason that we exist is because everything else exists and is capable of exchanging information with us to confirm our existance.

Light is a Boson, and it's not the only Boson. This is particularly special, because it is the only boson we've found as of yet. There are scientists who have predicted the existance of other Bosons, and these Bosons transfer the fundamental forces (ie. gravity, electricity and magnetism and the weak and strong nuclear forces). For example, Gravitons are predicted to exchange back and forth between interacting matter, if these gravitons exist, then you and I are exchanging them right now, and same goes for everyone. The Higgs Boson, which we hope to discover using the Large Haedron Collider, is thought to be responsible for the communication of magnetic and electric energy between charged particles, which again in a similar way to that of gravitrons connects me and you and everyone and everything in the world together.

Doesn't that make data transfer more amazing than just some guy typing numbers into a spread sheet?

Victor, is there really going to be an update energy use? Is it on the news?

Is light a cheaper/more efficient way of doing this? What are the reasons?

And if that is, what are the costs/needed applications?

Because the only scientific breakthrough recently was that 'artificial life' (AKA cell with artificial DNA) breakthrough..

Yes, in April 2009 the Australian Government announced it would build the National Broadband Network (NBN) to bring optic fibre to every Australian home.

Since then it has been in the newspapers every day.

And the rollout has already started in Tasmania and continues.

However the Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott, has said that, if elected, he will stop the rollout. And at that precise moment he lost my vote.

I think fibre optics, or bringing light into every Australian home, is a great national project, even larger than the railroads or the Snowy Mountains Scheme.

It will connect us to each other and the world. I think it is a step into the future.

What color is light? White.

They want to bring whiteness to all the homes.

This is racist.

The annihilation of the aboriginals continues.

:D

White light is the sum of all other colours, and is hence the most multicultural light you can get you can get. We could use black lights, but that would emphasize the whites on our shirts which would be even more racist

How are water, electricity, and light all interrelated?

Well, the Water Utility provides water to our home, and the Electrical Utility provides electricity to our home, and the National Broadband Network Company is providing light through optic fibre to our homes.

So we are all familiar with water and electricity being utilities in our homes, well soon, at least in Oz, all Australian homes will be provided with the utility of light.

My Government pumps water and electricity into my home every day.

But soon they will be pumping laser light into my home as well.

Yes, they have set aside 43 billion dollars to connect every home in Australia to laser light.

At this very moment we are communicating largely by electricity, but electricity is so yesterday, while coherent light is tomorrow.

Of course this is only the beginning, for soon our computers will morph from electrical computers to light computers - as some time ago the Australian National University invented a light switch to replace the electrical switch in our computer chips.

And laser light pumped into our homes will lead to all kind of inventions that we can't even imagine.

Connecting the whole country by laser light is like connecting the whole country by railroad.

The railroad only went to our borders, and was then stopped by the oceans. But laser light will connect us to the whole world. It will be like catching a train to Atlanta or St Petersburg or Osaka at the speed of light.

Substitung electrical controls, like maybe a Computer with optoelectronics is already possible. Substituting everything electrical tho with optical is not realistic. Too many devices need to transform a current or voltage to function at all. many are even dependant on a strong current. optoelectronics can in that regards only replace control and steering elements.

In Germany we btw have fiberwire connections, which communicate via light impulses since 1960 in our homes. 128 mb/s internet connections are availiable here for a small affordable price. but who really needs that ?

Perhaps the most interesting part of the optical network is that it will be directly connected to every Australian home, in the same way water and electricity are connected to every Australian home.

These utilities are part of the Welfare State, perhaps our greatest political achievement in the 20th century.

Here is a cool video with the movement of water.
