Phil Laak and Phil Hellmuth are both ESTPs. ZIIING! :cheese:

I would also venture to guess that Clonie Gowan and Doyle are ISTJs. I don't think there's an Intuitive in the bunch, except for that super pale kid with elf ears.

You mean that you don't think that poker players are Ns? I would think that there is a higher prevalence of Ns among great poker players than in the general population.

I don't think Hellmuth is an ESTP because he has a pretty set idea about how poker is supposed to be played. ENTJ or ESTJ seems right.

Hellmouth is definitely not a P.
And is clearly an N.
Every time he makes a mistake he lashes out at the opponent, of course blaming them. He gets down on himself though. He wouldn't be as good as he is without that.

Watch how he complains: Always about poor methodology. They're idiots because they call with 'bad hands'. Very conventional metric. Very Te.
As pious as he is with poker, I'd be astonished to see it marked the result of anything other than Ni.

I never said that N's can't be great poker players. I said I didn't think there were many on Poker After Dark.

This is what I'm saying. He gets pissed at poor technique -- very Te.
The only reason he's not attempting to correct them (and this is why he gets so damned pissed) is because part of his technique is to not give the enemy any advantage, lest he... give them an advantage.
E_TJ is convinced they've got the method. Realigning those who don't adhere to it brings them comfort. Additionally when their method fails (his does due to 'stupidity'), especially more than once, they become furious.

100% those three letters are right.. E_TJ... I've heard several ESTJs blow up like that at "stupid things" but I'm not sure about N's.. haven't encountered that many.

At a casino, I don't blow up. I take my beat quietly because I don't want people to know they got to me, but online...oh man...and it's always about stupid calls.

P.S. You might think Hullmuth is stupid (I just see him as entertainment), but he's still making quit a bit of money playing the game.

I don't think Hellmuth is stupid. The guy consistently nukes ass.
Thinking followed by intuition is a great type to play poker. Everything is parceled out into those percentages and odds. Very very few mistakes made.

ENTJ because if you watch the way he talks about the game and the way he plays, its as if he views it all as something more than just a game. They're not just cards to him.
It's his life. Poker is his life. That's Ni.
Just like Michael Scott (ENFJ) thinks he did captivate 10,000 people by captivating the one guy who captivated all of them.

I like these. Definitely agree with ENTJ for hellmuth, ENTP for negreanu, INTP for ivey, though i could see ISTP with baller Se and Ni. I've always wondered what the best functions are for poker. Ne/Ti has served me really well for games in general, but it seems like Ni might be the most useful function as far as reading people goes. It also seems like Fi is not gonna work too well in a game like this, so i like to think most of the pros are T, though i can see an INFJ doin really well. chris moneymaker, maybe ISTJ? he pretty sucks

professional poker boils down into a Ti mind game. Ne can be useful, but after you have an advanced understanding of the theories then it is only a matter of discipline and application. the theory will deviate when you incorporate instincts into the math

Interesting quote. What happens when enough people believe in what isn't. Does it become so? Isn't that the world we live in?
