normally if i play d&d or rpg video games i tend to play rogue or ranger type of character.i myself am a INTP and for some reaosn i always seem drawn to playing those classes or type of characters in movies
and if personality types is unrelated to your choosing how would you all type rpg classes in general?
im an avid fan of the fantasy genre and was wondering do certain types of personalities play certain types of classes or do you just pick whatever you like?
would a INTP(j) make a good rogue or assassin?

If I were a Baldur's Gate character, I'd be a Ranger/Cleric (but with that one option enabled where I get access to upper level druid spells, because ironskins and insect plague ftw).

I have only ever played mages. That is partly because in my campaigns, no one else has wanted to play one, but we all wanted one in the group.

I typically play mages as well, but largely because I like their typical portrayal as highly intelligent, and find their abilities more interesting. I find it more enjoyable to roleplay smart characters, and I think that's because I can let my creativity go wild using the mechanics of the game (instead of pesky real-life physics) with a smart character (and the possibilities are more numerous with a mage, I find), but it wouldn't make sense to do the same while playing as a dumb one.

Maybe it's the creative combos that can be done with magic. I think a smart swordsman wouldn't be nearly as fun to roleplay as a dumb mage, and a dumb swordsman might start off amusing, but would quickly run out of things to keep him "fresh".

TL;DR: Ne says mage!

I usually prefer to play characters that specialize in long-distance attacks in any video game. It's a major plus if they're considered to be one of the more intelligent classes. Characters specializing in melee attacks bore me.

ISTP and prefer Fighter or Ranger classes. I'm not so keen on mage/rogue classes. When playing Pathfinder I was a Druid, but specialised in animal communication rather than magic.

I tend to vary, I'll choose a different class almost any time for a different experience. As for a "real" rogue I would suggest ISTP/ISTJ, for rangers, ISFP/J. I see INTPs as more of a magic user.

I remember liking mages when I was young; but now I play a variety of classes and usually don't play spellcaster types except maybe supplementary spellcasting.

(The one constant thing is that I tend to gravitate towards characters that are fast and skilled/dextrous.)

I'm not sure it's correlated with type per se. I knew this ISTJ guy who didn't play anything else but Dragon Disciples (D&D/Pathfinder). Seriously. Everyone of his characters no matter starting class eventually seemed to become one of these, and when I first joined the group and had to play a premade character, she was a sorcerer and he was telling me how to make her into a DD.

Those D&D sessions must have felt like they were dragon on and on...

Almost never go for a Melee-style class like Paladins, Warriors, and Rogues. I'm usually a long-ranged support class when using magic, and a stealthy ranger when using the Bow & Arrow setup. If there is a Druid class then it's usually my first choice however, as they're just so much fun to play as~ Especially for those that morph into feral animals.
(As for what race I'd choose... Almost always an elf or any race derived from that bloodline. They're always so graceful and irresistibly intelligent!~)

ExFP - I like utility classes the best. :D My unit in Fire Emblem right now is in the Bride class (female only class - I had to make my gender a girl if I wanted to marry a guy) which is some sort of offensive cleric. I can attack short range with lances, long range with bows, and heal/assist allies with staves. I also like bulkier classes; my previous unit was a War Monk who could attack with axes and heal with staves.

I'm not a fan of sweeper classes, aka people who are powerful and fast to cash in as many kills as possible before they quickly get knocked out themselves. So I guess that mixed with my love for utility/bulky classes means I like to have my time to play on the battlefield and with my opponent. I do enjoy supporting the team but I think what I enjoy the most is being able to showcase all of my talents in one battle, while sweeping characters only have one job and are pretty cookie cutter when it comes to handling them. Even in Pokemon, I prefer Pokemon who are more defensive and supportive with moves that can trip up my opponent. I love to toy with my enemy before I kill them, which can sometimes be my downfall. I love crippling their team with poison and paralysis while showing off my team's vitality with healing and status-curing abilities.

So yeah, I love utility classes. :D Bride has been probably one of my favorite RPG classes to play as ever.
