...just found this thread!
did you type him as INTJ or did you see him typed somewhere?

elsewhere, he does have an intj nose, but i, for whatever reason, still feel cognitive dissonance. i know the sylvia film portrayal guy seemed very istp. and i can't see an intj writing "daffodils," but maybe (i hated the poem, and it felt exploitative).

My image of Ted comes more from his poetry than the little I know of his biography. The image I have of him is an ISTP or an InTP. This is one of my favorite poems by him and is illustrative of the reason for my opinion of his MBTI.

Lovesong

He loved her and she loved him.
His kisses sucked out her whole past and future or tried to
He had no other appetite
She bit him she gnawed him she sucked
She wanted him complete inside her
Safe and sure forever and ever
Their little cries fluttered into the curtains

Her eyes wanted nothing to get away
Her looks nailed down his hands his wrists his elbows
He gripped her hard so that life
Should not drag her from that moment
He wanted all future to cease
He wanted to topple with his arms round her
Off that moment's brink and into nothing
Or everlasting or whatever there was

Her embrace was an immense press
To print him into her bones
His smiles were the garrets of a fairy palace
Where the real world would never come
Her smiles were spider bites
So he would lie still till she felt hungry
His words were occupying armies
Her laughs were an assassin's attempts
His looks were bullets daggers of revenge
His glances were ghosts in the corner with horrible secrets
His whispers were whips and jackboots
Her kisses were lawyers steadily writing
His caresses were the last hooks of a castaway
Her love-tricks were the grinding of locks
And their deep cries crawled over the floors
Like an animal dragging a great trap
His promises were the surgeon's gag
Her promises took the top off his skull
She would get a brooch made of it
His vows pulled out all her sinews
He showed her how to make a love-knot
Her vows put his eyes in formalin
At the back of her secret drawer
Their screams stuck in the wall

Their heads fell apart into sleep like the two halves
Of a lopped melon, but love is hard to stop

In their entwined sleep they exchanged arms and legs
In their dreams their brains took each other hostage

In the morning they wore each other's face

what type do you think mr hughes is?

I think he might be an INFJ or ENFJ. His facial expression, smile and demeanor seem similar to Jack Kerouac (who I think is INFJ) and Jon Hamm (who I think is probably also INFJ but plays an ENFJ on Mad Men). Ted Hughes also reminds me of two of my real life INFJ friends.

I realize that typing based on looks is not ideal, although I do believe that facial expressions (regardless of facial structure) do have some relevance when it comes to identifying which cognitive functions are being used.

I suppose if he is INFJ or ENFJ that means he might also be ESTP or ISTP on account of those 4 types all using the same 4 cognitive functions, just in a different order. But I can't see an xSTP being that into poetry.

If I had to guess I'd say Ted Hughes is an INFJ.

Rather late on this thread :D :D

But I agree with the above, INFJ for Ted Hughes. Clearly an introvert. Displayed Extraverted Feeling - cuddly, warm, nice. Driven by Introverted Intuiton - sees patterns, meanings, depth.

His one time wife Sylvia Plath was INFP. INFJ/INFP is a classic pairing and explains why they felt so comfortable around each other. They both had their own things going on, independent, but could come together to connect very easily. May also explain why the relationship didnt hold together for long (to put it extremely mildly) - its more of a friend pairing than romantic, not enough balance or contrast.

Anyway Im going INFP for Plath because, again, clearly an Introvert. But her external side was less cuddly than Hughes. Quicker, sharp, a little cutting. Extraverted Intuition. Driven by a deeply rich inner emotional world of Introverted Feeling. Such a turbulent inner world that she couldnt handle it unfortunately, and wanted out.

Check these links to see the difference in their extroverted processes - Extraverted Feeling for Hughes, Extraverted Intuition for Plath.
