Steve Nash is an ExTP, he's definitely an extrovert from what I've seen of him. Plus he doesn't really act like an INTP. Tim Duncan - yes. Larry Bird - he's most likely ISTP. Don't know about Horry or Dr. J.

Most athletes are likely SP. With a fairly large contingent of SJs. I believe there are some N athletes, but they are a very small minority. Professional athletics requires constant awareness of immediate environment, you cannot be what people on this site have referred to as "sensotard" and have any hope of succeeding in athletics. So when trying to come up with athlete types, I would start with SP and look for reasons that they don't fit that.

Recently I've been thinking about temperament and coaching, and considered three prominent championship NBA coaches. I believe one of them is an N.

    Larry Brown - SP
    Gregg Popovich - SJ
    Phil Jackson - NT

I'd be happy to give my reasons for those deductions if anyone cares, but I picked those simply because to me they are a study in contrast, yet all very successful with very different coaching methods and styles.

That's interesting, Jeff. I agree with coach Jackson as NT (likely INTJ) and coach Pop as SJ (likely ESTJ). I've seen Phil typed as INTJ quite often. And yeah, SP's are the most common I would say, SJ's second most, NT's third most, and NF's 4th most.

    Notable players from each type:

SP's: LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Shaquille O'Neal, etc.

SJ's: Kobe Bryant, Ray Allen, Derek Fisher

    NT's: Tim Duncan

    NF's: Gilbert Arenas

ESTP - pretty much anyone ever described as a "true point guard". So Nash, Stockton, Chris Paul, Isiah, Kidd, etc.

You have to be Se dominant to see the holes in coverage, while the Ti helps by allowing the player to stay cool in tense situations. Focus is of primary importance, as well, and Fe helps by establishing a sense of camaraderie with your teammates, leading to an acceptance of your role as floor general.

john stockton is not extraverted. he's Ti dominant. i don't really agree with any of your choices. i see istp as way more common.

chris paul is extraverted but i don't think he's an estp. nash could go either way.

I used to read nba stat books inside and out, year after year. Analyze the players/coaches/owners with the same kind of focus. I added/rearranged a few that I'm pretty certain of with maybe a short comment or two.

I think maybe you guys are getting confused by the acronym NBA. The N stands for National, not Intuitive. If there are that many Intuitives in the NBA, then I am the king of West Uganda.

Disagree with a few of the big names. You may know stat books inside and out, but I've read about a few of the players in great depth. I'm not challenging your knowledge, I'm just saying I've read a lot about a few of the great players. The other players (about 90% of the league), I can't type accurately because I don't know enough.

The ones I disagree with and the types that they are (I mentioned this before):

Kobe Bryant - ISTJ (not ISTP)
Tracy McGrady - ISFP (not ISTJ)
Gilbert Arenas - INFP (not ESFP or ENFP - you have him in there twice by the way)
Shaquille O'Neal - ESTP (not ESFP)
Chris Bosh - ISFP (not ISFJ)
Dwight Howard - eSFP (not INFP)

    The ones I agree with:

    Magic Johnson - ESFP

I guess we'll agree to disagree on Kobe. Can't see an istj pulling 80 points off. Kobe wants MORE MORE MORE, full of ego, excess pride, but doesn't accept limits, convention (at least in his own little mind, but it's the thought that counts).

    Good catch on McGrady.

Gilbert is a perfect example of an insanely intuitive enfp. Can you say rags to riches to rags to riches to rags again and again, while still maintaining complete confidence with your team at the bottom of the garbage heap? I would've sailed away with jeffster by this point.

Shaq is all over the internet/television/radio waves, going back on past remarks, creating drama, etc. Dude craves the attention.

And as accomplished of an individual player Bosh is, in interviews he remarks pensively, the internal tension of whether to push for himself and leave a crappy team or stick around (slave to the snowball that is fear of change/leaving an already crappy team to the dogs) apparent. Frankly, if he were an isfp, he'd have left already.

I'd like to hear why you think Howard is esfp. The guy is a beam of sunshine on the court, but in interviews is soft, words dribblings from his lips like a leaky faucet, nervous eyes, wishful thinking, etc. makes me think infp. Almost cried watching one of his interviews.
