I think any pride that extends beyond an individual accomplishment tends to lead to all the bad things associated with the word. If your pride stems from something specific, like losing 5 pounds, it will be a nice boost for awhile but the memory or the skill/goal itself will fade and you'll back to your old self until you do something new. But if your pride stems from including yourself in a larger category, your vanity can last as long as you continue to place importance on the abstraction. You don't even have to do anything, though it helps if you know that other people who happen to have your skin color/heritage/etc. have done things for you.
