I don't have the time to explain this now too deeply (and as heart said it could be out topic), but we are talking about huge amounts of energy that is not impossible to produce by other means, but so close to impossible that it isn't probable.
Every monumental invention has been deemed impossible before it was invented. Try describing a light bulb to someone in the middle ages. Try describing heavier-than-air flight to someone in the 19th century.

Yeah, but the point isn't really if it is impossible to come up with technology capable of producing as easy and abundant energy as oil. It's quite possible, actually, to get the fusion power working in couple of decades. The thing is that the governments move really slowly. The shift from this system to the new and better one is the key. It will take so long time and so much money that it is very improbable to make this shift once the oil production has started to go down. If you have a global decline, there will be little motivation in building something that might not work.
