Street preacher quoting from the Bible fined for calling homosexuality an 'abomination'
Street preacher quoting from the Bible fined for calling homosexuality an 'abomination' - Home News - UK - The Independent

Is this a sign that religious texts can expect to be held to the same standards as others?

I don't know of the laws in the UK, but it would be perfectly fine for someone to do that in the US. We get crazy street preachers and people with signs with aborted fetuses on my campus at times. I'd prefer for these people to fuck off and not impose their views on us, but legally speaking, they aren't breaking laws here.

Right but we can still tell them to fuck off. Free speech goes both ways.
I like to rock n' roll all night and *part* of every day. I usually have errands... I can only rock from like 1-3.

Heh. I'm not one to start unnecessary conflict when I'm just trying to go about my day. I prefer to just ignore them or maybe flip them off as I walk by. Besides, there are usually plenty of students that have no problem getting up in these people's faces. What I don't get is why these crazy people seem to think that insulting us is a good way to win us over. It's baffling.

    Exactly.

He wasn't fined for quoting the bible. He was fined for publically announcing hateful, suggestive harmful, and inflamatory things.

Initially, the preacher refused to pay £250 in compensation to a gay man he offended and only relented when he was told he would face 45 days in prison if he did not pay the amount.
Cool, we can make a living off of being offended!

I don't understand the delineation there. Both are practically the same.

Yeah, I'm not sure how it works over there.

I've heard about the "soapbox battles" over there where Muslims and Christians will argue with each other in the public parks / squares, though; the Christians I talked to said it was a thing. That tends not to happen here in that sense; usually you just get some extremists ranting on sidewalks and people ignore them, or I've seen extreme religious groups target pride parades and try to piss off the attendees so that a confrontation will break out and if they get slapped, hit, or their signs taken, they'll sue the township and/or attackers.

The article said this guy had also been taken in multiple times before, including attacks of Muslims, but was never convicted for anything. Maybe it was a "Okay, you're still doing this" and whereas one offense wasn't a big deal, repeated offenses accumulated to something worthy of a slap.

Is The Bible not the word of God? He needs to be held accountable for his words.
