    Default Article on drug legalization

I'm sure there's been a thread about drug legalization before (besides Uber's retarded thread), but I can't seem to find it with the search function. If someone finds one, feel free to move this.

Here's a great article arguing for drug legalization (all drugs, not just marijuana) from an economic perspective.
"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

Prisoners are a commodity. If you legalize drugs, how will the fat cats get paid?

Commodity to the privately owned prisons.

Private prison companies stay profitable by courting political influence and supporting strict sentencing laws.
Corporate-owned prisons need a steady flow of inmates to maintain profits. To protect their profit margins, prison companies exert political influence by contributing thousands of dollars to state political campaigns. Lobbyists for private prisons support tough-on-crime legislation that ensures the continued need for prison space, including mandatory minimum sentences, life terms for three strikes, and sentencing juveniles as adults.

The vast majority of prisons aren't privately run, and none of them were when marijuana was made illegal. Drugs are illegal for many different reasons: latent puritanism, latent racism, anti-deviancy groupthink, business interests, government self-aggrandizement, militarized law enforcement. . . The list goes on forever.

Legalize it, don't tax it, and that's it.

No, please do tax it. If you've ever gotten whiff of some of those substances, those things are NOT what we want around for no particular reason. The only reason to legalize them is to use them as a source of residual income so that the money the druggies earn can be that much more quickly put to much better use.

Legalizing drugs now illegal is simply a loophole to redistribute wealth away from those that are stupid enough to do them in the first place. And the faster, the better.
