One of the startling pieces of evidence that led scientists to do more research into it, occurred after 9/11. Just the reduction in the trails given off by air travel that was halted for 3 days, had a significant impact on temperature ranges in the US for those 3 days.

The evaporation point of water has gradually been reduced in the US because in some areas 18% less photons from the sun penetrate our atmosphere (which makes water evaporate more slowly). The visible pollution effect, if taken away, would show a MUCH stronger link between CO2 and temp change (that is being hampered now).

There was also a cooling period from 1945-1975 or so that people think came from aerosols as well, so the idea has been around for awhile, though perhaps new details have been worked out.

I really suggest people take a look at Climate Change: Discovery of Global Warming

The AIP is simply an organization of physicists. I see little reason for them to be biased.

If you believe that the opportunity for more research is a bias, it seems like leaving the question "hotly contested" would actually be more conducive for that than the position they outline. The sheer number of theories they address is astounding, and it seems they covered every theory brought-up in this thread so far.

Accept the past. Live for the present. Look forward to the future.
