    Agree.

Date rape/gang rape is a real problem on college campuses and is not a new phenomenon--it is something that should be addressed and dealt with, but when any problem in a society becomes more topical/publicized, there will always be knee jerk reactions such as this story which may feed on peoples' feelings and anger while not necessarily remaining 100% factual. These types of stories in no way help create any real solutions to such problems, as they only serve to diminish the movements which they seek to strengthen, while serving as ammo to be utilized by any critics of said movements.

More news on the topic: U.Va. rape accuser's friends begin to doubt story - Washington Times

It's seriously beginning to look like "Jackie" was intentionally trying to create fake drama via a fake boyfriend to make her real love interest jealous, using fake texting phone numbers to create the illusion of a real boyfriend (using a photo of someone from her high school to be a photo of the fake boyfriend). It isn't too much of a stretch to believe that she faked the rape incident in order to take advantage of the solicitousness usually granted to rape victims.

The proof isn't definitive, yet, but the scenario I describe above would seem to make much more sense than the original story, especially as every fact of that original story has been proven to be false or is otherwise unsubstantiated.

I've known people like this, but they fortunately tend to be rather rare. They can't help but tell elaborate stories to get attention from friends, or to worm their way into jobs for which they are distinctly unqualified. Even after the fact, with all the evidence revealed, it can be hard to believe that someone is that brazen of a liar.
An argument is two people sharing their ignorance.

A discussion is two people sharing their understanding, even when they disagree.

It was incredibly callous of people to check into whether or not this rape victim's story was actually true. Forcing rape victims to prove they were actually raped is a great example of rape culture and it needs to end. We have to start believing rape victims and stop forcing them to relive their horrible experience. Greenfairy was right all along.
"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

Default UPDATE: "U-Va Lawyers: It was about a boy..."

'Catfishing' a love interest may have sparked the UVA gang rape debacle

A Charlottesville Police investigation later determined that no one named Haven Monahan had ever attended U-Va., and extensive efforts to find the person were not successful. Photographs that were texted to Duffin that were purported to be of Monahan were actually pictures depicting one of Jackie’s high school classmates in Northern Virginia. That man, now a student at a university in another state, confirmed to The Post that the photographs were of him.
“All available evidence demonstrates that ‘Haven Monahan’ was a fake suitor created by Jackie in a strange bid to earn the affections of a student named Ryan Duffin that Jackie was romantically interested in,” Eramo’s lawyers wrote in court papers filed this week.

“The story was a lie when she first told it in 2012, and it was no more true when Rolling Stone recklessly published the tale in 2014,” Eramo’s lawyers wrote. They also wrote that there is “no factual basis whatsoever” in evidence submitted so far in the case “to conclude that Jackie is even an ‘alleged’ victim of sexual assault, let alone an actual victim.”
I'll attempt to do a briefer version of the lengthy, disturbing narrative that was uncovered.

Evidence so far indicates that "Jackie" invented a suitor named "Haven Monahan" in order to advance her relationship with her classmate Ryan Duffin, who had "friend-zoned" her after she had repeatedly tried to have a romantic relationship with him. She then had this fictitious U.Va "rival" Haven Monahan become online friendly with Ryan Duffin in order to sing her praises and lament her indifference to him because she was in love with "some loser freshman". She then (purportedly) alleged sexual assault by Haven who was fictitiously jealous of Ryan Duffin to earn Ryan's sympathies and attention, and when he and others pressed her to report the rape, her story became more convoluted as she backpedaled and widened the circle of perpetrators in a (very failed) effort to cover her tracks and diffuse the focus on the fictitious Haven Monahan. She then told Ryan that Haven had apologized for the attack and that she had foolishly forgiven him because she "just couldn't stay mad at anyone," all in an insanely elaborate effort to earn his love; and her story, which had clearly grown legs and spun out of control once the media and administration picked it up, exploded from there.

    ...

And that is a very special kinda crazy.

Also, I don't understand why this clearly-not-a-rape-victim "Jackie" a.k.a. pathological liar still enjoys a protected identity while all the other poor s.o.b.s in her highly-destructive orbit are still having to contend with the media and public scrutiny.
