    Why isn't the FCC taking control a good thing? I get that the government probably has no good in mind, but on the other hand, I have been told by a lot of people who seem trustworthy that without net neutrality, the Internet will no longer be what it is today.

    Is the issue that the FCC will do more than enforce the current status quo? Because the status quo is nice; that's what I'm in favor of.

    If it's an Obama idea, then it's probably a bad one. No thanks. We don't need the donkeys who run the Veterans Administration, the DMV, the Postal Service, etc etc to ruin yet another industry.

    My impression of this is that it will be a tax. The laws will require that internet companies incur a penalty for being down for 5 minutes and that cost will be passed down to the consumer.

    The government just can't keep its grubby little hands away from my money. They'd like to tax me for breathing air, probably because I'm polluting it or something.

    I would be skeptical of this proposal, there is sure to be a catch somewhere.

    Let's remember these are the same people who have and continue to use the internet as a way of eavesdropping on innocent people.

    We don't have net neutrality right now, so I don't know how invoking it would preserve the current state of the internet. I mean, if we did have net neutrality, then how was Comcast able to throttle Netflix?

    This whole issue is a red herring, anyway. The only reason a company like Comcast throttling Netflix is even an issue is because Comcast has a monopoly or duopoly in every market is "serves". If the monopolies and duopolies these ISPs have were destroyed, throttling wouldn't be an issue because I guarantee you Comcast would not throttle Netflix if Comcast's customers actually had a choice with internet providers. Comcast would go bankrupt, losing a massive number of subscribers, while trying to extort Netflix.

    One of the annoying things about government regulation is when more regulations are piled on to fix the problems caused by other regulations. That's what is happening here.

    There's another thread on this issue. You might find it worth reading.

    The FCC and the Net Neutrality Fight
    "We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

    Its about big companies buying speed from cable companies to make their connections fast while making others slow. So basically if this law isnt able to protect the neutrality, small companies that cant pay the cable companies for speed, their websites can be slowed down by the cable company, similarly if you are their competitor, they can slow your websites down to get rid of competition.

    I posted those two videos explaining it few posts back, you should watch at least one of them.
    @theDarkSide

    @SilentMusings i was thinking that too. one thing that popped was the "if the contents are legal" then no one shouldnt lower your lane speeds or cut them down thing. Now with all the antiterrorist/whatever laws they could make pretty much any website illegal, which would mean that it could potentially be turned to government controlling the internet, instead of cable companies controlling internet speeds to certain servers. Ofc its obvious that they would add that sort of thing there anyways to get rid of childporn websites and what ever, but using this sort of "excuses" to manipulate laws is what usa does, so you never can know until they put it in action and then its too late..
