Default 18 year old becomes youngest state law maker

"Saira Blair didn't turn 18 — the legal voting age — until a few short months before the 2014 midterm elections.
Tuesday, she won the election for West Virginia's 59th House District.
Facing off against Democratic candidate Layne Diehl in a state that has turned red in recent years, the West Virginia University freshman became the youngest state lawmaker in the nation after sweeping 63% of the vote."

Um, what?? Her frontal lobe is no where near developed! She's never even voted! Only in West Virginia, and maybe Kansas. What are people thinking??

Blair, who characterizes herself as a pro-life, pro-family, and pro-jobs fiscal conservative, decided to run when she took a hard look at the reality that faced her and her peers after graduation. She realized the solution was to make West Virginia more business-friendly.
For someone with a 'fresh perspective and innovative ideas', she sounds an awful lot like your average run-of-the-mill conservative.

My first reaction is *sigh*. She seems professional about it and is going to take it seriously. I am of the opinion that there should be a minimum age of 25 to run for public office. If she does poorly she'll (hopefully) be voted out.

    My thoughts exactly.

I agree. My politics have changed SO much since I was 18, and I'm only 22. Moving out of my parent's house and actually hearing educated and intelligent people offer different opinions made a HUGE difference. Since she is barely 18 and hasn't even completed a year of college I would assume her politics are still her parent's.

My thoughts exactly. Her father is State Senator Craig Blair with deep pockets and connections.

At the time she said she wanted to run for office because she was concerned that her educated friends could not find jobs. She encourage the friends who were old enough to vote to do so and she also got help from her dad — a state senator.

Awww! I wish my father could buy me a seat. Some of us could only dream I guess.

In all seriousness, I'm all for new things, but she's freaking 18! As most of you have mentioned, she's probably still under the reign of her parents political opinions.

Really, that should be the problem right there. She has nothing to do with new things. Her platform is as old as she is young.

Bad idea. There are age requirements in the US Constitution for President (and I believe for Senator) for a reason. Personally, I wouldn't even want anyone younger than 25 to vote.
