    Unhappy RIP Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

I just heard about this, but the Russian writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn died yesterday at the age of 89. For those who don't know, he's most famous for writing The Gulag Archipelago, which exposed the crimes of the Soviet regime.

As far as MBTI goes, people have often classifed him as INFJ. Even if he wasn't, he was still a great man and has been a hero to me for years.

    RIP Aleksandr Isayevich.

    Song of Farewell (Old Hundredth)

Come to his aid O' Saints of God, come meet him angels of the Lord.
Receive his soul, O Holy One; Present him now to God Most High.

May Christ who called you, take you home and angels lead you to Abraham.
Receive his soul, O Holy One; Present him now to God Most High.

Give him eternal rest, O Lord, may light unending shine on him.
Receive his soul, O Holy One; Present him now to God Most High.

I know that my Redeemer lives, the last day I shall rise again.
Receive his soul, O Holy One; Present him now to God Most High.

My mom came up to me last night and said, "Dana! That author you're reading died today!"

"Mom, I think Dostoevsky's been dead for quite some time now."

"Well some Russian author died today."

    "...."

    I'm sorry to hear that.

From what little I know of him, he was a very insightful man who suffered pretty horribly/unfairly at the hands of the State... and yet grew and thrived because of the experience.

That shows a lot of character.

(For those of you who do not recognize his name, his most famous "quote out of context" is about how the line between good and evil runs through the human heart.)
"Hey Capa -- We're only stardust." ~ "Sunshine"

“Pleasure to me is wonder—the unexplored, the unexpected, the thing that is hidden and the changeless thing that lurks behind superficial mutability. To trace the remote in the immediate; the eternal in the ephemeral; the past in the present; the infinite in the finite; these are to me the springs of delight and beauty.” ~ H.P. Lovecraft

My favorite quote from The Gulag Archipelago , " If only the decent Russians had fought back, Solzhenitsyn says, if only they had ambushed some of these secret police thugs in the hallways of their apartments with knives and pickaxes and hammers, if only they had spiked the tires of the police vans while the thugs were in the apartments dragging out their victims, they could easily have overwhelmed Yagoda's forces and forced an end to the mass arrests. But they didn't fight back, and the arrests and liquidations continued."

That sounds like this quote from The Gulag Archipelago:

And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say goodbye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests . . . people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers or whatever else was at hand? . . . And you could be sure ahead of time that you would be cracking the skull of a cutthroat. Or what about the Black Maria sitting out there on the street with one lonely chauffeur what if it had been driven off or its tires spiked? The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and . . . the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!

It is because of Solzhenitsyn that I know this phrase: "If you have done nothing wrong, comrade, you have nothing to fear." It was coined by Lavrenti Beria, Stalin's head of the NKVD, the secret police.

Beria was scarier than Stalin. Sometimes I hear that phrase coming from the mouths of Americans (minus the "comrade," of course) and it chills me to the bone.

He was present in the Spiegel interview?
    I do not think so.

    He was not there.
If he was, he was drugged and abused.
