    Default Scottish independence referendum

Is there a thread about this already? I haven't been able to find it.

Well, the referendum is today and unofficial results tomorrow.. What do you think about this? Any predictions? Will they go their separate way? Should they?

I have a feeling they would split.

It's sad though if they would.

It's quite a economically beneficial (atleast initially), peace inducing (well into today), historical (emotional) bonding union. And they are ready to give it up.

But I guess the Scots would benefit from it more.

What's going to happen to the Union Jack?

It will be interesting to see what happens. We'll find out more in 2.5 hours when the polls close.

The Scots would be idiotic to leave.

Their economy would stagnate as an independent Scotland couldn't possibly have a currency union in these circumstances. In reality the people who stand to gain the most are the English - Scotland is disproportionately a welfare drain.

If they do split, it will just be a further sign that the country is falling apart. Civil war by 2030.

Most news outlets think it will probably be no, but it is well within the margin of error; Hence, no one is really sure. The sad thing is there is going to be no clear winner so it will rumble on for years more.

Really the worst thing about this is that it's a simple majority and there's no requirement to hit a certain turnout percentage (though this latter issue probably won't be a problem by the sounds of it).

I feel like it's a disease of the developed world to be incapable making any significant political change, and that nudges me to think the vote will be a no.

I'm not sure if I favor the vote or not. I see the reasons for either decision and the cost-benefit analysis doesn't seem to be leaning either way.

To me, the most interesting question is if a yes vote will have serious impact on separatist sentiments in the rest of Europe.

I'd like to see a "yes" just to see how they'll handle some things. I'm wondering if there would be an issue in dividing up the national debt.
