Find a new source. The maximum range of a modern Buk missile is 25 kilometers, with a maximum engagement speed of Mach 4. Perhaps he was thinking of man-portable missile systems?
Vertical? I had the same thought as Rasofy. It's very unlikely anyone could accurately coordinate a strike form the ground to 11km on an object moving that fast. By the time the missile got up there, the plane would already have moved nearly the same distance (you have to take into account deceleration, any hit would be at a way lower speed than Mach 4).
However, I do think a ground missile strike was what took the plane down. You have to ask yourself why the Russians (or anyone for that matter) would shoot down a passenger jet on purpose. I know it is a possibility as when i was flying to Istanbul from Singapore last month, the flight path was deliberately diverted to the north to avoid Iraqi airspace. Obviously it is possible for aircraft to be hit by missiles at that altitude.
I wonder who will be the first to blame this one on Muslim extremists.
Hope is the denial of reality. It is the carrot dangled before the draft horse to keep him plodding along in a vain attempt to reach it. We should remove the carrot and walk forward with our eyes open. -- Raistlin Majere
