Disagree, there's too much risk for abuse.

I think that anyone who wants to purchase a gun - any gun - needs to be over age 18, mentally sound, and either employed or retired. People who wish to own military grade firearms should have to have prior experience with gun ownership and take an additional course.

More education around gun safety and participation in clubs would help as well.

I take a middle ground view - that there ought to be some regulation, but banning many classes of guns outright isn't a solution.

An excellent point. I don't think it's a reason for gun ownership or CC in and of itself, however it does show you just how "off" peoples perception of law enforcement is as pertains to their "pro" status. Which sometimes is the basis or a part of an argument.

Here is a video of Oscar Gomez getting shot in the back (fatally, hours later) as he lay face down, constrained by other officers by a cop who in his words "accidentally" discharged his firearm after pulling it out and aiming it at the suspect's back as he stood directly above him. Ooops.

Upon further reflection I've come to realize just how "perfect" this is.

I was not there when that incident happened, but I have heard and read some instructors guesstimate what happened.

The cops heard over the radio that a blue pickup was heading their way. They then saw it slowly proceeding down the street toward them. It was before dawn so visibility was not great. When one of the occupants reached to throw a copy of the Los Angeles Times to someone's front door, one of the officers panicked and fired. On hearing that shot the other officers started blazing away. It's a miracle those ladies survived when you consider that the cops fired like 103 rounds at them. And in addition to scoring about 70 hits on the pickup, the offers also hit several houses. Thankfully none of the residents were hit.

She said her husband was inside the store when the attempted robbery happened. A man put a gun in her husband’s face, demanded his cellphone and any money in the store, and threatened to kill him if he did not comply.

Then, the woman said, her husband turned around, pretending to get money, but instead pulled out a gun and shot one of the suspects.

A military veteran with a concealed handgun license came to the rescue and exchanged gunfire with two alleged robbers Thursday in northeast Harris County, killing one of them.

Police said that shortly after 6 a.m., a man knocked on the front door of a Coalville resident. The man cut the homeowner in the neck with a knife.

The homeowner then used a handgun to fire three shots into the man's torso. The suspect managed to drive five miles away from the scene on Old Mill Road, just south of Fort Dodge, where police ultimately found him.

“I looked at him and I see his hands and see he has a 9-mm pointed at my face,” Bishop recalled.
“He kept saying ‘That's all the fuck you got? I'm gonna kill you, I'm gonna shoot you,’” the retired patrolman recalled.
“I said 'Listen this is everything.' So I started taking everything out of my pocket and throwing it on the ground, hoping he would look down at the ground because I was trying to get some type of advantage and it just didn't look good.”

“I didn't want to get shot in the face,” he said. “I didn't want to get shot.”

"It's not a good feeling to shoot anybody,” Bishop said Tuesday afternoon, tears streaming down his face. “It was just something that happened. I didn’t want to die. I wanted to be able to see my kids and my wife.”

Case in point, an 18 year old gun wielding car jacker was shot dead by a retired NYPD officer as he sat in his Mercedes in Brooklyn.

This is sheer propaganda for the gun culture, for continuing and predictable gun massacres, and American masculinity.

And this propaganda is meant to excite and arouse, just like any pornography.

What is striking about this propaganda is its entire lack of psychological insight.

Yet here we are on a site devote to psychology and we allow the worst kind of propaganda without even a hint of psychological insight. Why is this?

Why is it that on a site devoted to psychology is there such a dearth of psychological insight? Why on a site devoted to psychology is psychological insight not at a premium?

The first part of the answer is that some come here not to learn about psychology but to relieve tension. They are in servile positions in life with their parents, their teachers, their boss, or their peer group. And such servility causes personal tension, and they come here to distract themselves from their psychological pain.

And rather than dealing directly with their psychological pain they hide it, even from themselves, with psychological defence mechanisms.

And how relieved they are to discover so many just like themselves - so they can feel normal and stand shoulder to shoulder with their psychological defence mechanisms against their almost unbearable psychological pain.

    Who can blame them?

You are welcome to start threads examining the psychology of gun hobbyists, gun usage, gun violence, or any such topic. If I recall, you have started at least one. If it has not generated the kind of discussion you had hoped, that just means that not enough members share your interest in such a discussion. As with the proverbial horse and water, we cannot force people to take interest and respond the way you wish.

Meanwhile, continuing to post remarks like these wherever they are remotely relevant may in fact serve to desensitize people to the points you are trying to make. They start to get dismissed out of hand as the same old distractions or derails. I may be wrong, but I don't think this is what you intended.
I've been called a criminal, a terrorist, and a threat to the known universe. But everything you were told is a lie. The truth is, they've taken our freedom, our home, and our future. The time has come for all humanity to take a stand...
