Seems to me most immigration groups do assimilate here. The ones that don't, including illegals, tend to keep to themselves.

There are groups that seem to NOT want to assimilate. I see the seeds of this in America, but it's far worse in countries like England, the Netherlands, Germany, where groups refuse to assimilate and have protests demanding the very government that is hosting them change their government to THEIRS.

I agreed. If you don't accept rules of your new country, leave.

What particularly irritates me is that fact the if we are critical of Islam, even if constructive, we are branded as Islamophobes, it's taboo. Whereas virtually every other religion, criticism is accepted as the norm.
It is not only islam. If you criticize Isreal you are anti-semite.
If you are cricitize black you are rasists.
Accusation of rasism is a modern political weapon.

There are wide swaths of areas in America where nobody speaks English.

The difference is Islam is NOT a race.

Too many people get off expressing their "moral superiority". Those people remind me of this Portlandia skit:

"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

It will be interesting to see how immigration reform gets through congress as it eventually will.

I'd bet on piecemeal reform, but that it won't happen till 2016/2017 or later.

We really need to focus on getting our Visa system fixed. The border, despite the overheated rhetoric, is not as quite as big a deal as some would make it seem. Im speaking strictly with regard to the number of border crossers, not the security threat that a porous border poses. That would be a completely different conversation.

Visa overstays are the bigger problem (not saying border crossers aren't, just that we should focus on the visa system before we focus on that).

I think Conversational English should be an Iron Clad requirement of citizenship. And we need to focus on increasing high skilled immigration. And create incentives for highly educated foreigners studying here to stay instead of taking the benefits of an American education back with them to their home countries when they finish studying.

The national security issues, re: drug cartels and human trafficking along the border needs to be dealt with. Probably with a combination or legalizing many (but not all) drugs, and aggressive military cooperation with Mexico's gov't to eradicate the cartels, root and stem, once and for all.

Also, any legalization of illegal immigrants already here, will have to come subsequent to implementation of all enforcement measures. We will need to assure the American people that immigration reform won't just set the stage for millions more low skilled immigrants coming here, like the reform of 1986 did.

To assure the American people we need to establish a baseline of declining illegal immigration over at least a 3 year time frame. Once we have locked in the reforms and established that they are working and being enforced, we can then create a pathway to citizenship that isn't too easy or too arduous.
