    I don't think so.

Young people especially have the power to turn things around in the world - and shame on us if we don't act on such motivation.

This reminds me of the Model UN episode of Community:

“A logical, effective, common sense move, Annie Kim...One which flies in the very face of the United Nations itself: a fundamentally symbolic organization founded on the principles of high-minded rhetoric and empty gestures.”

It depends on how you're lashed. It's very unlikely that the doctor will die from his sentence if it is administered in the usual Saudi Arabian way—i.e., broken up into weekly bouts of 50 lashings each. (Women are given 20 to 30 at a time.)
Not sure if good or bad news though.

As a great Zen Master used to say "we'll see"

I mean, what are you going to do about it?

You know who makes the biggest changes in this world? People with power, money, and armies. Not people that sit around a forum and talk about it. Though for anything major to happen, it must be discussed and ideas and plans formulated, but unless you can execute those plans, you're just masturbating. Which has its merits.

There is nothing to prevent any of us from e-mailing the news stations, Jimmy Carter, senators, Congressmen, or even Sean Penn to ask if they can exert any influence on the Saudis to release this man. Maybe Secretary Kerry can discuss releasing this guy and offering him asylum behind the scenes.

Senator Rand Paul is alive because of modern medicine and because his attacker punches like a girl.

I think the Old Testament max was 39 or 40 lashes. That seems like plenty for any crime, if you're going to do that kind of thing.

I'm not sure a moderate number of lashes is a lot worse than our overcrowded prisons where assault and rape appear to be relatively commonplace, after which chronic unemployment and poverty are all but guaranteed.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

What have you done for me lately. Not worth wasting time or money on. We have problems here that need dealing with.
