Default Vermont calls for a Constituional convention

On Friday, Vermont was the first state to pass a resolution to take money out of politics and call for a Constitutional Convention. JRS 27 (PDF) passed in the House 95 to 43.

The resolution fights the 2010 Citizens United and the recent McCutcheon decisions, which decided that money is free speech and allows for unlimited campaign contributions.

“I see this decision as an opportunity to kick-start a movement that I hope will spread throughout the country and let people become aware of the real problems we have with the influence of money on elections and on our public policy,” Rep. Mike Yantachka, D-Charlotte stated.

Supreme Court decisions can only be overturned either by a constitutional amendment passed by Congress or a coalition of at least 34 states to form a convention.

"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

I saw this a few days ago on reddit. This is wonderful to see, but I feel it might just remain a pipe dream. It's going to be really hard to get 34 states on board with this, or get congress to agree with this. One can hope, and maybe the ground word will be laid by this to change it in the future, but sadly, I am not holding my breath.

The Constitution of the United States authorizes a set of specifically enumerated powers to the Federal government, and forbids all others.

If the federal government were restricted to the specifically enumerated powers, there would be no influence for money to buy.

I love Vermont. If everyone I loved wasn't in NC I'd move there.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.
