Default Guns and the government (again)

I was just thinking: if we have guns to protect ourselves from the government, it would actually be pretty ineffective given all the technology and advanced weaponry the military has. If the government decided to get all repressive and militant on us we'd be screwed carrying a handful of guns.

    Discuss.

As for me, I don't think I'm gonna bother.

But it would be a complete nuisance when every person has a gun to defend against the government.

Think of the Middle East, we can throw whatever we want at them and we would not truly get anywhere because their culture > our technology, money, and guns. We spend millions just to drop sophisticated metal on them and all we get is even more people hating on us.

Ideology, Ideas, and Culture are very powerful tools. Add the three with guns, and you'd get fanatics that view a regime as repressive.

The first gun control laws (Virginia, 1640) were enacted by pro-slavery folks to keep guns out of the hands of blacks so they wouldn't be able to defend themselves against slavery. After the Civil War, gun control laws were enacted by Democrats who wanted to prevent blacks from being able to defend themselves against the Ku Klux Klan. In the Dred Scott v Sandford decision, Chief Justice Robert Taney wrote that blacks can't be citizens because "it would give them the full liberty to keep and carry arms wherever they went." From Ann Coulter's "Never Trust a Liberal Over 3"

Guns are the ultimate equalizer and threat to tyranny. This is why Hitler, Mao, and Stalin all wanted to ban guns.

I guess a lot of people figure they'd rather be the shooter than the shot but thinking that way means more people end up shooting...

Apparently the Afghan insurgents didn't get the memo.

    Exactly.

If people just comply, and get into the ovens without resisting, no one need be shot.

True. But love, for people as well as for guns, is not interested in arguments. Love is, love wants, love hurts.

It's a pretend right meant to perpetuate the illusion that we are a free country and we could successfully revolt again if we wanted to.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”
    ~ John Rogers
