Well, in that case you just have to imagine being a black woman living in the 19th century.

Their population density is pretty high, so they won't be running out of people any time soon, but the lopsided demographics do cause problems which are only going to get worse. They are not the only county with these problems, but their situation is different in some regards because they have a pretty stationary and homogenous population. Not very many people permanently move to Japan, and not very many native Japanese move to other countries, so it will be especially interesting to watch this sort of thing unfold in an isolated, test tube-like environment.

Many of the former Soviet countries have fertility rates far below replacement and are imploding as a result.

I see nothing wrong with this - whatever floats their boats. Dogs are easier to take care of (no changing diapers) and you don't need to hire a babysitter.
It's tragic. It means our society might be collapsing. I think a lot of factors are causing this, but in the end you can't argue but that it's national suicide to stop having children. America needs to double or triple its population over the next century, and that's not going to happen unless we get a higher fertility rate or a ton of immigration. And since we can't seem to let immigrants alone, our only choice is to have a higher fertility rate. Which isn't going to happen. The nation is going to decline...

I told my kids if they don't breed and give me grandchildren I'll just get a little dog.

I had four kids, so population decline isn't my fault. I can't blame my kids for not want to have kids with the way the economy is going, especially for people their ages. I would not mind adding to our clan by biological means, but I would not want to take on raising another kid from scratch and mostly myself like I did with my kids. Even with my husband doing the bread-winning it was too damn much for me.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

It's not safe where I live for a dog. Surrounded by too many busy streets. My sweet little guy got run over and died a couple of weeks ago and I'm still really torn up about it.
