Of course, because she was a mod here.

True, but if I agreed with trolls I might be perceived as a 'troll ally', or something like that. I know very little about how internet forums work; this and PerC are about the only ones I've ever been on, so I don't understand much more than common sense about trolling.

If you've never seen an actual troll post, or gotten a good idea about it from others, then common-sense doesn't help.

The word "troll" has been reduced to a catch-all phrase, a mere insult, or an excuse to ban someone. Real trolling requires skill. In order to troll expertly (no I don't troll forums), it's first necessary to hang back as a forum lurker for a while in order to determine the forum's weak points, to get a general measure of the kind of people who post there, the strength of moderation and its rules, etc. Strategic posting is key here. If there's no strategy (along with an attempt to appear completely sincere in one's posts), then it's not trolling. The long-range goal is to bring down a user, a mod, or even the entire forum.

    A douchebag merely insults people.

Isn't that like saying "you aren't a real soldier unless you're navy seal"?

I agree that it can be a catch all, like saying someone is trolling. I can (and have) troll a user, but I am not a troll. But a troll is still a troll if he loves to fuck with people all the time for whatever reason. You don't have be amazing or strategic to actually be a troll.

Either way, we could argue all day about it and in the end there is no official troll.
Don't like my modera... Oh wait, wrong forum. Carry on.

I agree that a troll doesn't HAVE to be amazing. A troll is just more strategic in attaining the goal. An "amazing" troll would be impressively effective at trolling, I suppose. I'm just trying to distinguish the fact that one can be a douchebag without being a troll.

Wanting to verbally take down a user or a forum is douchebaggery. But part of the strategy of being a troll is to avoid obviousness. If it's obvious douchebaggery, then there's no way it will work out because then people will be on the alert (thus the saying, "don't feed the trolls"). A troll has to put on the appearance of sincerity, and usually this requires taking a feigned interest in the forum topic. In the case of one very famous troll post, the troll was pretending to be an American complaining about his own country. In fact, he was a Brit stating common European complaints about America based on stereotyping of American culture. If he had been seen as just another non-American America basher, his troll wouldn't have been so successful. As it was, the forum members were so taken in by the OP that their entire energies were put into responding to the troll thread, which became so long and complex, and which was cross-posted to so many other usenet forums, that it became severely disruptive of normal activity on many other forums as well as the original one.

    That IS amazing.
