Default Parents sent to prison for death of child due to "praying away illness"

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...death/5612317/

A pennsylvania couple has been sent to prison for 3.5-7 years for 3rd degree murder in the death of their 8 month old child whom had pneumonia, and refused to seek medical treatment to treat it. Instead, opting to use "faith healing". They were under a 10 year probation when this occurred, in which they were required to seek medical attention if any of their children became sick. In 2009 they had lost another child of theirs, a 2 year old who had pneumonia, which resulted in the probation sentence.

    They have 7 surviving children.

To quote the article: "Last year, Herbert Schaible told police that medicine "is against our religious beliefs." He said, "We believe in divine healing, that Jesus shed blood for our healing and that he died on the cross to break the devil's power.""

"You've killed two of your children ... not God, not your church, not religious devotion — you," Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Benjamin Lerner said.

    That about sums it up.

I certainly don't have a problem with a state forcing the religious beliefs of the vast majority on these two in a criminal case like this.

Nope, but the synopsis sounds intriguing.

I agree - this is just sick.

Christ. That's not a pleasant way to go either. It's long and torturous. Poor kids.

He talks about a case in New York in the '70s (IIRC) where a boy had cancer and his parents refused to do chemo because they thought it was cruel and uncivilized, so they used laetrile instead. This caused a big controversy, but the state decided not to intervene. Not surprisingly, the kid died.

In an ideal world, people would remain free from any sort of religious interference until they were old enough to legally consent.

If any case represents government encroachment on religious freedom, it's this one. If you believe religious people have the right to practice their truly held religious beliefs, then you must defend this couple, otherwise you are a hypocrite.

Religions would collapse if this happened. The vast majority of their membership comes from brainwashed children. Religions prey upon vulnerable people.
"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."
