    great actor. he had a lot of really fantastic dramatic acting moments, but i just love him in this scene from Along Came Polly:

    You hem me in -- behind and before;
    you have laid your hand upon me.
    Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
    too lofty for me to attain.

    Most often what happens is that heroin is cut and a tolerance is built the amount taken goes up, then they get stuff that is not cut to such a degree and an overdose happens because they are doing more than they are used to.

    WTF??? Nooooooooo....
    This is really upsetting + pisses me off.

    Dammit, he was a real talent and had a lot of life left + kids. So STUPID of a loss.

    Yeah -- one of the all-time greats. Brought depth and gravitas to every role I've seen him in. I don't think it would be an overstatement to call him an artistic genius.

    May he rest in peace.

    Heard about this a few hours ago. I'm just devastated. I stood in the shower and had a bit of a cry.

    What a loss...

    he really was one of the best working actors, maybe the best. really a shame how he died, especially considering he'd been sober for over 20 years before relapsing.

    heroin doesn't have to be impure to kill someone, especially if they're shooting it. i agree with your politics on this issue, but that's a really misinformed argument for it.

    Yeah, I read he was on the wagon for 23 years until he fell back off last year.

    At least he made the effort, my dad had a 50+ year alcohol addiction that he never battled, he just lost himself in it to the detriment of many. I wish hoffman had found a way to get back on top of things.
