    Why is that striking?

It made what seemed a half-hearted and obligatory passing reference to the issue over-sexualization of women in popular culture, but mostly chose to focus on boredom, which is pretty trivial in any context. The over-sexualization of women is a problem, and if a feminist blog doesn't think it's worth talking about, who on earth thinks it's worth talking about?

    EDIT:

A lot of the comments are more interesting than the article. And this one in particular is important to me.

This is great. Thank you for avoiding the cliché, repeated ad infinitum on this site, that any criticism of an "artist" like Cyrus for her sartorial choices is somehow "slut shaming," no matter the thoughtful commentary that goes into it.
    How about that?

I don't care if these women want to show off their enviable figures. But as you so rightly pointed out, there is no there there. Let's reclaim our bodies and our nakedness, sure, but it's not out of line or inherently anti-woman to demand a reason for that reclamation other than "because". The very fact that male artists do not have to adhere to this less is less is less is more standard says volumes about what this is really about: objectification and sexualization, the reification of the female artist's body because the female artist's art does not, cannot, or is not seen as capable of standing on its own. Some I'm sure see this as a forward step, but it feels incredibly regressive to me.
    Said better than the article.
    Go to sleep, iguana.

I think the intent was not to trivialize the objectification of women, but rather to say that women who capitalize on their objectification for it's own sake aren't making much of a statement because viewing women as objects is in fact the norm. Especially when these women are drawing attention to themselves for these sexually provocative displays with apparently no deeper agenda or commentary. There's nothing interesting or empowering about that about essentially playing up a role women have been relegated to for centuries.

i'm like really really offended by the whole look of it all so much.

i am cool with being weird...or shocking or all out sexy and outrageous. i knew some drag queens who did that whole shtick very well but this...coupled with the awards shit. i'm just left terribly embarrassed for her. like...i'd be moving to tibet and no one would hear from me again.

Oh hey... Just deleted that cuz there's some full nakedness on page 3 or something and wasn't sure if that was breakin the rules or whatever but yeah

Really really bad..right? Dude with a point n shoot in a boring apt.

And it's just revealing but not even a tiny bit sexy. And that's just the worst thing to have accomplished haha

We live in an Attention Economy dominated by celebrities, and twerking is an extraordinarily successful way of garnering attention.

And she who garners the most attention wins.

And of course we are hypnotised by twerking.

And twerking is a mime. Sex is being dramatically mimicked on stage.

Normally of course the miming of sex is limited to the brothel, but pornography ensures we live in the brothel-without-walls.

So twerking is the expression of the brothel-without-walls in the Attention Economy.

Reading @Mole using "twerking" in a sentence excites me.

Miley Cyrus made this moment possible for me, and for that.. thank you, Miley.
