Word. That's why I have learned to avoid feminist websites like Jezebel, it's impossible to have any normal conversation about feminism there because as soon as you say anything critical about porn or women objectifying themselves you are branded a slutshamer. Because letting it ALL hang out is really the way to liberate yourself as a woman.

It's weird. While I think O'Connor's words have a lot of truth to them, it's sort of none of her business, you know? People just don't usually tend to react well to unsolicited advice from strangers.

That said, perhaps she wasn't writing it only for Cyrus, but for a whole generation of young women...

Perhaps she should not have focused on trying to convince miley to change her behavior, but if miley is telling people that O'connor is an inspiration to her I can understand why O'connor would want to say "hey this is not what I'm about at all". I think the two videos are a good examples. Sineads does focus entirely on her face and her emotion. Miley's interjects the same idea but between hypersexualize images of her body. For O'connor I can understand as an artist tying to say "look, if you really want to follow my lead you have to realize that the beauty of the video I made is that emotion is enough. You don't need all this explorative sensation to get attention."

This is what makes it O'Connor's business. She could have just denounced Miley's comparisons and tried to distance herself from it. I agree with whoever mentioned that she is probably addressing her open letters to a much broader audience than Cyrus, almost using Cyrus as a (not uncorrectable) example of what not to do.

As for slut shaming, sluts should be ashamed of themselves. Some people just need to recalibrate their views of what constitutes a slut.
I've been called a criminal, a terrorist, and a threat to the known universe. But everything you were told is a lie. The truth is, they've taken our freedom, our home, and our future. The time has come for all humanity to take a stand...

Yikes. What is a slut, in your opinion?

Ok I can see that, but then shouldn't she have addressed that instead of framing it as life advice for Miley Cyrus?

I actually really love a lot of the things she says in the letter, but it just seems like... I don't know... I just am not sure I agree about the setting of the letter, if you know what I mean.

Miley shot back, btw, with a tweet mocking Sinead's struggle with bipolar disorder and comparing her to Amanda Bynes:
