Unsolicited advice. I have done zero research on this scandal, but I saw a write-up about it this morning and thought of this thread. Live and let live y'all.

i don't think sinead would've attempted to give her any sort of advice had she not been mentioned as an inspiration for her tho nic.

Well, open letters are sort of Sinead's thing now, she's written open letters to a TD, politician, in the Irish government who called her a loon.

Even so, unless I'm seeking advice, I'm not going I respond well to a list of things I'm doing wrong and suggestions to stop. If she and Miley had a friendship and Miley had gone crying to her about her recent negative publicity or something, that's a different story. But I relate a lot to the sentiment expressed in that article. As a young woman, I made plenty of mistakes, but I never once listened to someone just coming down on me without having expressed any dissatisfaction with my own situation.

I think Sinead offers plenty of good advice but if I were Miley and I were given that kind of tough love in public, I would flounce too. TBH, I think I'd probably still be upset and react poorly even if it had been conveyed in private but it would probably be less flouncy.

The mental illness crack was just way too low though.

I think there's truth on both sides of the argument here. I've often seen people jump to give other people advice when they're in no position to do so themselves - it's presumptuous of O'Connor to assume that Cyrus is unhappy because of her experiences. On the other hand, I think O'Connor had the best intentions, and I think a lot of what she wrote is most likely relevant to Miley Cyrus. She has complained a lot in the past about paparazzi and the media portrayal of her, actually. Now, it's up to Hannah Montana herself to decide what she wants to do, and I rest assured that she (along with most famous people) will do whatever they think they need to do to keep the spotlight on them and thus, the dollars pouring in.

For real? I ask because I generally like tough love. What would be a more effective way of communicating the same message to you?

And now Annie Lennox has written an open letter, because why the fuck not:

As if the tidal wave of sexualised imagery wasn't already bombarding impressionable young girls enough..I believe in freedom of speech and expression, but the market forces don't give a toss about the notion of boundaries. As long as there's booty to make money out of, it will be bought and sold. It's depressing to see how these performers are so eager to push this new level of low.Their assumption seems to be that misogyny- utilised and displayed through oneself is totally fine, as long as you are the one creating it. As if it's all justified by how many millions of dollars and U tube hits you get from behaving like pimp and prostitute at the same time. It's a glorified and monetized form of self harm.
