    Default An elitist facebook?

Could an elitist facebook, like the conception the "villains" of the movie The Social Network had in mind which would be exclusive, work as well or become a rival to the facebook which exists today?

Is Facebook a provider of a social network service or, as appears to be the case, the provider of the social network service?

Isn't facebook already evil? Or rather evil enough for now. As for elitism, it might work, people with the money to afford exclusive treatment already do so in pretty much every area of life, so I suppose social networking wouldn't be much different.
'One of (Lucas) Cranach's masterpieces, discussed by (Joseph) Koerner, is in it's self-referentiality the perfect expression of left-hemisphere emptiness and a precursor of post-modernism. There is no longer anything to point to beyond, nothing Other, so it points pointlessly to itself.' - Iain McGilChrist

Suppose a tree fell down, Pooh, when we were underneath it?"
"Suppose it didn't," said Pooh, after careful thought.
    Piglet was comforted by this.

Or Cornelius! Really, just try it, put 'facebook' in Google Translate and translate it to Latin. It says Cornelius! It's a fucking omen, man!

I don't think a paid service could ever rival facebook if it stays free.

But I could see paid groups existing.

1: for security conscious and/or people who don't want ads, I could imagine a facebook premium option. Maybe having special profile features and a little star (or whatever) next to your name could make it into a status symbol.

but more on point, an elite facebook?

    Sure.

A somewhat more secure forum and networking ground for the rich and famous and various wannabes? I suppose you could. I don't know how popular it would be.

It already exists, and has for years.

And no, it does not rival facebook (if you mean by users, influence, etc).

Built into the model is the fact that it will be, if successful, only about 1/100 the size.

Please! Tell us about this exclusive membership option, man of mystery!

    (stews with anticipation)

Maybe you can't tell us mere mortals, after all, it won't be nearly as exclusive any more. But I'm willing to pawn off my 30" chrome spinners to get in. I'll do anything.

On a related note, why do they have the "+1" next to videos on porn sites?

I sure as hell don't want people to know I use Google Plus.
