I think it is easy for those who are put on a pedestal to develop a superiority complex. To get to a point where he thinks that the others around him are less than human.
Think about the wide range of scenarios in which this happens: popular kids in high school, the rich people in America, the power brokers, and the LIBOR traders. Privilege breeds contempt for those who don't have it, especially when those with privilege fail to see how circumstances and others help played a big role in where they get (IOW, when they stop appreciating the breaks they got to reach where they did).
