Default I've been concerned about this for a while...

Actually I was concerned about it after actually visiting Rome and the Vatican, if that makes sense.

I actually think that celibacy should be rethought by society at large and religious institutions because while so many people will repeatedly say that its unnatural or results in perversions there is the unacknowledged reality that there are a lot of people who are single and live celibately not as a matter or personal or religious or philosophical discipline but simply because.

Although I really think that the manner in which the RCC has instituted and continues with celibacy for the religious seems to be a prohibition on heterosexuality rather than honouring what is for some people simply their way of being or for others a spiritual disciple.

Individuals' sexual needs appear to vary greatly, and perhaps that should be more thoroughly examined as to the reasons why. Both opinions appear to be true depending on the individual. Some people appear to do fine with celibacy, and for others it would be extremely unhealthy.

    The end.

Yet another thread that could have remained unborn if just a bit of critical thinking had preceded its potential creation.

Well, there are some studies showing that excessive masturbation can deplete (temporarily of course) the dopamine levels in the brain (associated with motivation and reward) and contribute to depression. Perhaps celibacy allows for a stabilization of dopamine levels? Of course, there's the problem that the sexual desires don't go away, especially when the safety valve of masturbation is not permitted.

I think the ideal state for humans is moderation, where sexual desires are acted upon, but not excessively. Anti-masturbation/sexuality is an extreme position, to be sure, but it occurs to me that it's not totally insane.

As for the article about the "gay lobby" in the Vatican, I have no idea what that's supposed to be about.

As if they would rethink celibacy and not their kooky religious dogma. Ya, celibacy is a loooooooong way from the root of that problem. I say fuck it. Those people are beyond hope.

I suppose you feel that way about buddhists too?

I'd be curious to see these studies.

At my last doctor visit I would told that the best way to combat depression, besides medications, is exercise, chocolate, and sex because these can help raise and stabilize dopamine levels. Anyway, that was the doctor's orders for me.

I read about it in a wired article with a title like "is porn good for you?" I'm afraid to google it at work... it'll have to wait. It may be that partnered sex has a different effect than masturbation, but why this should be so is puzzling. (Is there a more INTP statement than that?)
