Default Disney Pulls Jessie Episode over Gluten-Free Bullying

    Excerpt:

"The Disney Channel has pulled an episode of its popular children's show Jessie, after thousands of parents complained the storyline ridiculed young people with food allergies.

During the May 17 installment titled Quitting Cold Koala, a nine-year-old character named Stuart Wooten stated that he could not eat plain flour pancakes because he was gluten-free.

Instead of supporting his needs the rest of the cast made snide remarks and one child even threw pancakes in his face."

The article includes video as well.

I despise bullies so much that I can't watch the video. I might want to punch some Disney kids in the face. If you watch it, let me know if I'd want to. Well, no, not the kids, but the ones responsible for putting this on television.

    Bullying is wrong period.

    The celiac thing...
...all of my kids have celiac disease and while it's a little tiring to lumped into the fad thing with GF diets, it's not a big deal since people are free to think what they want about it. If they would have been bullied about it...I think the older one would have shrugged it off. Or used it to start a food fight because he likes to stir things up. My daughter would have been in big trouble though because she would have beat the crap out of somebody for throwing something at her.

And they're wrong about the DH--you have to ingest gluten in order to trigger that and not everyone with celiac disease has DH.

    I can't have gluten either.

I agree, the bullying itself was bad enough. If it's true that they threw pancakes in his face, that's not exactly something I'd want other kids to mimic who watch the show either (meaning, in addition to the bullying). It could go in the kid's mouth.

Yeah, I still want to punch them.

They used to give vegans and vegetarians a hard time when I was growing up, although a lot of people adopted veganism or vegetarianism as a result, in a sort of hipster kind of way.

I would have too but I would have been the crazy kid defending gluten-free kid from bullies. I got into several fights in school for stepping in for the picked on kids. Just pissed me off and I would act without thinking.

Same here! I don't get it. If they must glamorize something, are they too stupid to see that it would be cooler to glamorize the "bullying" of BULLIES? Disney execs have gone so stupid these days.

I've watched a few episodes with my nieces and nephews.....its probably fair to say you wouldn't want children who watch the show to imitate most of the crap the kids (and nominal adults) on the show get away with.

If I'm not mistaken, this isn't the first time tv shows have made those with special dietary requirements into sniffly nerdy punching bags....... and even if I am mistaken, it has still already gotten old.
