I find it scandalous that members of government would formulate a plan to lie to the American public about a tragic attack for political gain. I find it scandalous that they might have committed a felony in doing so by violating the Hatch Act. I find it scandalous that in attempting to coverup the coverup they might have broken the law again by lying under oath. I find it scandalous that those who may have lied under oath or were deceitful might have also been compensated or threatened to keep them from telling the truth. I find it scandalous that someone who did tell the truth might have been punished by his bosses for telling the truth.

Seriously, Nico, what's not scandalous about a coverup of a coverup?

The actual US Embassy to Libya was in Tripoli. There was no embassy in Benghazi. The facility in Benghazi was a secret facility operating under the pretense of a diplomatic mission. Its actual purpose was to collect the weapons which were looted by insurgents when Khadafi was overthrown, and ship them to insurgents in Syria by funneling to Turkey by ship, and then overland into Syria. The US paid very large sums of money to Libyan Islamists for the purchase of these weapons, and then had the weapons stolen back from them by the same guys they bought them from.

Needless to say, the facility in Libya skirted US law, and exposure of its true purpose would have made clear the US duplicity of pretending to oppose Al Qaeda, while at the same time arming them in Syria. Some suggest, that the people at the Benghazi facility were not aided militarily, because this would have drawn attention to the existence of the facility, and raised questions about its purpose.

So in summary.. CIA facility in Benghazi was in the business of buying what used to be Khadafi's arsenal from Islamist insurgents in Libya, and then selling them to Islamist insurgents in Syria, using the Turks as delivery men. After taking US dollars for many weapons, the Islamist insurgents in Libya attacked the facility where they were stored for shipment, and took the weapons back. The most dangerous of these weapons to the world at large, were shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles.

Sooooo... to prevent news of this from proliferating during a sensitive presidential election cycle.. the administration 1) didn't militarily aid the people under attack in Benghazi. 2) Concocted a story about a "justifiable anger" among the Islamic world about some corny video, and asserted this as the pretense under which the Benghazi facility was attacked. 3) Devised an extensive cover-up about the entire sequence of events, and prevented those involved from testifying as to the truth of events.

Additionally, there are serious questions as to the whereabouts of the president as all of these events transpired, and as to whether or not it was he, or his adviser Valerie Jarrett who was actually making the decisions.

That seems like very small fish compared with all the other shit going on in and around your many branches of government - if it is true. It also suggests that it only became a scandal months after it had been declared a scandal. Funny how that works.

I just don't understand why you, as a German citizen, respond to things like this as a partisan hack would.

It's bad. Obama's administration has done worst. Other administrations have done worst. That doesn't change the fact that it's bad and arguing about how comparatively bad it is seems pointless. People have to be held accountable. I'm sure we're equally cynical about how government often works, but I want people brought to justice when possible.

I react to it the way I do because I have seen this thing shift shapes over the months, from a spontaneous riot induced by a silly movie to a CIA cover-up with subsequent cover-up, all the while maintaining the same level of seeming importance. I have not really looked into it because I do not care either way, but it does strike me as an election campaign stunt that has grown legs and gone awry. However, if it is what you think it is, then, sure, it deserves to be investigated.

In other words, the US deserved what happened to it in Benghazi.

We know from Bret Baier's interview of Mr. Vietor (communications official) that Obama was not in the situation room when the attack occured, but he was in the White House. Why won't Mr. Obama tell us what he was doing those 8 hours? Was he sleeping, playing golf, watching porn, playing with Bo, or shooting hoops?
