Default They Finally Took My Advice

But I think they should go to somewhere even more undesirable or barren than Detroit. Like Area 51. Or the Bermuda Triangle.

    We love you too.

I read about this a while ago. I think it is an interesting idea, but not necessarily a good one. It kind of reminds me of the fortress city people were thinking of building in Idaho or somewhere. I'd rather change the country than attempt to isolate myself from it.

This is an old idea, the free state movement prefigures this with their idea that enough Rand supporters moving to a single state and voting together they could create their free market paradise and benefit from all the tax dodgers who'd want to move to their treasure island. Jersey in the UK behaves like this.

It all makes me think of the comic strip I read a long time ago about Cobra Island in the old, old (newsprint paper) Battle/Action Force comics. I dont know if the Cobra Island storyline has made it onto the screen in either of the two adaptations of the comics to the screen.

Well given that their scriptures feature a story of the rich people all withdrawing to a private island in an attempt to black mail the world with what I'm sure Rand imagined was a rich mans version of industrial action it doesnt surprise me they're up for it.

Then again its not like rich people have been doing this since the beginning of time, I'm pretty sure that the most recent string of world economy threatening scandals unleashed by the banksters were in many ways political actions by the uber richies. Most of the world being spell bound by the various capitalist ideologies werent up for considering it as such or mandating any actions against them though.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie did their own version of this didnt they? I'm pretty sure that Nick Cage did too. Its surely obscene wealth to be able to buy islands?

It'll be fun to watch from the sidelines. And I'm sure people will write really interesting political science papers about it!

I don't have high hopes for it, though -- if it even happens.

(Also, @Marmotini, the title of this thread is hilarious. Props!)

Well, there's buying an island, and then there's trying to get that island to secede from whatever nation it's a part of.

I haven't heard of this happening before (though I'm sure it has); the closest I can think of is this, and its success is arguable, though it's got a pretty cool story behind it.

Too bad they didn't pick Chernobyl
For all that we have done, as a civilization, as individuals, the universe is not stable, and nor is any single thing within it. Stars consume themselves, the universe itself rushes apart, and we ourselves are composed of matter in constant flux. Colonies of cells in temporary alliance, replicating and decaying and housed within, an incandescent cloud of electrical impulses. This is reality, this is self knowledge, and the perception of it will, of course, make you dizzy.

Wait...a separate city-state running in isolation and based on Ayn Randian philosophy?

    Maybe soon...PLASMIDS!

There is no longer anything to point to beyond, nothing Other, so it points pointlessly to itself.' - Iain McGilChrist
