    @DiscoBiscuit
    Let's see if I can get it right this time.
    http://www.ehow.com/about_4731161_mu...ines-cost.html

    Let's say the machine costs $3.5 million to buy and install
    Operating cost is $800,000 per year x 7

    That should come out to $9.1 million to have the machine for 7 years.

    Apparently operating the equipment can earn $10,000 an hour.
    A year = 8765 hours.

    8765 * 10,000 = 87,650,000

    87,650,000 * 7 = 613,550,000

    So, costs $9 million. Makes $600 million?

    Have I missed anything?

    I was *really, really, really* trying to find a reason other than the highly cynical and irrational "the healthcare industry is a profit-hungry mongrel like/worse than (take your pick) any other industry," but LOL it's hard to find any logical, reasonable answer....Especially in light of the fact that other western democracies with much lower GDP spend a hell of a lot less and provide a hell of a lot more, on average....even despite bureaucracy. And trust me, you'd be hard-pressed to find a country with more regulation and bureaucracy than GERMANY, and still......

    /end emotional senseless rant

    Seriously, though, I find it very difficult to understand. Very difficult. It would be one thing if the US did not care or invest anything. Or if it were a less developed country. Or if we could find any other reasonable explanation....

    Fee-for-service could be an issue, though, very true....But that works in other places as well. Perhaps the issue is just that the fee-for-service is not capped like it is in other countries???? (Or is it? Forgive me, I am not well versed in these matters).

    @Little Linguist
    Even the equipment seems to cost less everywhere else.

    @sprinkles, you know, it's a funny thing, that. Now, I believe in coincidence, I really do. But I also believe in....well, never mind, I promised myself I wouldn't rant so much this year.

    @Little Linguist

    Not to be any more cynical, but much of the military industry is also for profit too.

    @sprinkles

    That is true that things in general cost a lot less in other countries than it is here. But it isn't the whole reason why healthcare cost soooo much here (even though people are so cynical about socialized healthcare here.)
