    Default The Demise of Ladies

Journalist Hanna Rosin is on book tour now promoting the thesis that we’re about to experience the “end of men,” and though the definitiveness of her title is moderated in her interviews, her basic point is that women are gaining the upper hand all around. She has not convinced even the New York Times Book Review of this, but then her main thesis is not my subject today. I want to look at one of her side arguments.

As part of her book research, she spent a night hanging out in a bar with some Ivy League business school students, and wrote up the evening for the September issue of the Atlantic. Ms. Rosin had chosen this particular group because they had the reputation for living the Master’s Thesis version of Girls Gone Wild, and that is indeed what she found.

As the evening unfolds, a dirty internet picture gets passed around a table on a smartphone, as one woman is flipped the bird by her lover when someone mentions “marriage,” and another entertains a group of men with an imitation of an Asian call girl’s come-on. The only student who seems astonished by all this casual decadence is a South American, who says that in her country, women who act like this are either desperate or the type of professional who doesn’t need an MBA.

But the real kicker is in Ms. Rosin’s response. She writes: “So there we have it…. We are, in the world’s estimation, a nation of prostitutes. And not even prostitutes with hearts of gold. Is that so bad? Or is there, maybe, a different way to analyze the scene that had just unfolded?”

She goes on to say that the progress women have made toward ending the power domination of men is a “remarkable development” made possible by “not just the pill or legal abortion but the whole new landscape of sexual freedom—the ability to delay marriage and have temporary relationships that don’t derail education or career. *To put it crudely, feminist progress right now largely depends on the existence of the hookup culture.”

If this is feminism, then pass me the patriarchy, please.

Ha! This is bullshit, its not feminism, although I'm not surprised at the confusion, the chattering classes who came up with post modernism are the only people who could get into such a stupid muddle.

I was hoping for something wise, but that's just a sexual conservative rant - probably made by someone with a religious bias.

I agree with the bolded. And I don't think anyone has any business defining what a "real" relationship is for anyone else. People can have all kinds of relationships at the same time. An open romantic relationship doesn't mean a person can't hook up with another person either casually or as friends with benefits. And any hook up can turn more serious. There's nothing wrong with "sleeping around" as long as it's done responsibly, ethically, and honestly.

Also none of this is related to being a lady or not in my opinion. I think of being a lady as having class- education, refinement, culture, sophistication, and self respect.

    That's just kind of insulting.

If it was an article about straight white guys . . . well, there wouldn't be an article if it was about straight white guys. It would be like writing an article saying some days are rainy.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

Obviously there have been differing standards for men and women concerning sexual ethics. The problem is that instead of raising our standards for men we just lowered our standards for women.

    Absolutely!

There's been feminist critics of it too, like the author who wrote Female Chauvinist Bitches and the opposition to the iFeminists who are cultural and fiscal libertarians and therefore have no problem with prostitution, pornography, other forms of exploitation if there's a lady boss.

Although the liberal biases, which incidentially are totally beloved by capitalists because they love it when peoples politics allow them to make a fast and dirty buck or two, wont see it for that, no, it'll be dismissed with the usual hate labels.

That is what I am inclined to believe. I have two daughters and two sons and I would be disappointed and worried if any of them behaved in the way described in the article. That my daughters would be singled out for criticism for such behavior, while my sons have no more than that behavior expected of them does not sit well with me.
